What is the best way to convince or fight for something or someone you love when your parents won't let you?

Asked by monobonbon (67points) October 17th, 2010

i am a 17 year old girl. i live in a house where i am not allowed to do many things. for example im not allowed out, and such.
but my dad is like a dictator. he will not listen to reason and i want him to hear me out but his dictator ways wont allow him to.
i want to convince him to let me have a boyfriend but any talk about a guy friend or boyfriend he goes balistic and threatens to kick me out or send me to boot camp and he doesnt joke around. he truly has a dictator personality.

how can i convince him to let me have a boyfriend?

If he really is that bad then, perhaps, you’ll have to wait until you are old enough to move out and pursue what you want. You know your father the best and if he is unwilling to listen to you…

One tact you could take would be to ask him what he is afraid of and then address each of his concerns.

Good luck. It must suck being held under someone’s thumb.

You may need to wait until you are 18 and can legally leave home.

Is this a cultural thing? Are your parents immigrants?

You could try enlisting a school counselor to talk to your parents, but there is no assurance your father, if as strict as you say, would listen to outsiders.

Ok, I know you will not like this answer but here goes…He isn’t a dictator, he is a father. He is responsible for your welbeing and care. Keeping you home may be his way of protecting you.
If you have the attitude that he is a ‘dictator’ then that tells me your attitude is judgemental. At 17 you do not have the necessary experience to judge anyone.
You will never get what you want as long as you have this opinion and attitude.
This is just my opinion, take it or leave it.
Good luck
