Gas powered clothes dryer not spinning, but blowing hot air. Can it be fixed?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) November 14th, 2010

My boyfriend has had the absolute day from hell, and just as I was getting him cheered up again, we discovered that the dryer wasn’t spinning. He took it halfway apart and can’t see anything wrong with it.

He’s upstairs showering now, and I’d like to maybe have good news for him when he comes back. So, can it be fixed? Or is he going dryer shopping tomorrow?

Is the belt on the drum in good shape? There is very little that can go wrong with a dryer.

It is the belt that goes around the drum of the dryer that is broke. The belt turns the drum that the drying clothes are in.

@blueknight73 and @chyna are most likely right. When things like dryers and vacuums stop turning, it is usually because a belt has broken. The belt connects the motor to the drum. You usually have to order the part unless you have a shop that sells your brand and the dryer is of relatively recent vintage. You get the product number from somewhere on the dryer, and go online and google that number together with “dryer” or “your brand.” You’ll end up with a number people who sell the product, and you can choose the one you want.

You should open the dryer up so you can see the motor and if you belt is broken or stretched you’ll see it there doing nothing.

The belt probably broke. Do not run the dryer until it is fixed. A fixed drum with clothes is a very great fire hazard. It cost me a new laundry room and almost the loss of my house.

If the belt is not broken, it could be stretch out of shape. Inspect the belt and see if it has little cracks in it. If so, it needs to be replaced.

The only other thing it could be other than that is that the motor’s bad, and isn’t turning the belt.

Like everyone else is saying, probably the belt. Do the repair yourself if you possible can. A repair outfit will try to charge $120 to replace a $6.00 belt.

How old is the dryer? other than the belt being replaced, i also had to have the motor rewound. you say there is heat, but the drum is not rotating? that leaves out a blown fuse. not much to go wrong with a clothes dryer. if its not the belt, then the motor should be examined. its easy to be electrocuted, if the dryer motor has a short. if your boyfriend does not know what he is doing. for safety sake. call a repairman. better to be safe, than sorry.

I just reread your question and discovered its a gas dryer. i believe the gas heat is independent of the motor on your dryer. if you have not done so, then check the fuses to the dryer in the fusebox. you may have to use a flashlight to see a broken fuse. if this does not work, then buy the same type fuses and replace each suspected bad fuse, one at a time.

@john65pennington you are possibly right about the motor failing but usually there is a circuit breaker in the motor to shut it down if it overheats. If a fuse was blown, however, the solenoids for the gas would not open and the control board would not work. The problem is probably the belt. The question is does the owner hear the motor turning? If he does then it is the belt if not the motor’s bad. Remember the drum turns before the gas turns on and ignites.
