How much pain should one expect from having acrylic nails put on professionally?

Asked by tranquilsea (17775points) December 3rd, 2010

For the first time in my life I have had false acrylic nails put on. The esthetician really reefed on my fingernails. She ended up cutting into my cuticle a bit too much and caused it to bleed and her enthusiastic filing slightly separated one of my fingernails from the nail bed. Now, some 5 hours later, the tips of all my fingers hurt like hell.

Now I know that the bleeding and the nail bed separation should not have happened and I am not ever going back. But is it normal for your finger tips to ache like crazy?

It shouldn’t hurt – if anything, it will be a little uncomfortable. I’ve never experienced pain like what you’re describing and I’ve had fake nails put on many times. Again, maybe some discomfort (getting used to the glue on your nail, etc….) but not pain. Don’t go back there!!

Oh honey, you had a sucky nail lady. I’ve had acrylics put on and taken off a lot since I was 18, and I’ve only had a couple bad experiences. I did have a lady who did pretty much what you’ve just described to my nails and it hurt like hell.

It is normal to have tenderness when you first have a set put on though. I’ve been wearing acrylics for a solid year now (this time), and each time I have an old set removed and a new set put on I have a little discomfort. They may still be a bit tender tomorrow also, but by Sunday everything should be fine.

Don’t forget to have them filled and cut back every 2–3 weeks, otherwise they can grow out too far and begin bending at the ends of your real nails if you accidentally hit something. Happened to me yesterday, so I just got them fixed today.

I am really, really regretting getting it done.

My husband and I are heading out to his Christmas party tomorrow night and I have a knock-out dress that I will be wearing. I thought it would be nice to have great nails to match.

I have throbbing pain in my fingers now and I really hope that the pain goes away by then.

You shouldn’t feel pain unless they are ripped off! There may be some minor discomfort if there is extra acrylic material under part of the nail but that is fixable with a nail file usually. Find a new nail professional and maybe a lawyer.

Sorry you picked the technician from hell because there shouldn’t be any pain or bleeding when you have acrylic nails put on or when you get a manicure. I have had mine for a year now and never experienced any pain. Only after having them removed last month were they a little tender, but not painful.

Ugh, I’m so sorry! If there’s that much pain, it sounds like she was so rough that you may have a little bruising under your nails. I would suggest taking a little ibuprofen tonight and possibly soaking your hands in some warm water laced with hydrogen peroxide and Aloe Vera.

Also, if you have a health food store nearby, go buy a tube of Calendula gel/cream for the tops of your fingers where she cut you, and buy a tube of Arnica gel/cream for the undersides for the pain of having your nails lifted. (With the Arnica for underneath, you can dab it under the tips of the nails with a q-tip, and really try to get it in there as far as possible.)

Oh, and try to not regret it too much. It’s not normally like that. I absolutely love my nails, and I’ve had very few bad experiences.

I think this will be my last post because it hurts to type.

Thanks for the tips @WillWorkForChocolate. I was just about to got take some ibuprofen.

I think the pain I’m getting in the rest of my fingers is because she was filing so hard that it put a ton of stress on my nail and nail bed.

I’m going to go back in there tomorrow and talk to the owner. This is crazy.

I’ve had to do that once before when the lady was really rough with me, soaking in the medicated water and putting the gels over and under… I can totally sympathize. (((hugs)))

Wow I’d be VERY pissed! I would defiantly call the place where you had them done and complain, demand a full refund even. They will try and tell you they will redo them for free, tell them you never want them touching you again!

I’m so sorry you had to experience this, getting your nails done should be a fun relaxing thing. I hope you have a better experience next time.

I hope you knock em’ dead at your husbands party!!!

@JustJessica Thanks :-)

The party was last night and we had a really good time. The side of my nails are still sore but it is nothing like what I experienced on Friday.

Glad to know they’re feeling better now. :)
