Causes of pink eye include:

Viruses
Bacteria
Allergies
A chemical splash in the eye
A foreign object in the eye
Most cases of pink eye are caused by viruses.

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis may affect one or both eyes. Viral conjunctivitis usually produces a watery or mucous discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis often produces a thicker, yellow-green discharge and may be associated with a respiratory infection or with a sore throat. Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are associated with colds. Both viral and bacterial types are very contagious. Adults and children alike can develop both of these types of pink eye. However, bacterial conjunctivitis is more common in children than it is in adults.

Allergic conjunctivitis affects both eyes and is a response to an allergy-causing substance such as pollen. In response to allergens, your body produces an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). This antibody triggers special cells called mast cells in the mucous lining of your eyes and airways to release inflammatory substances, including histamines. Your body’s release of histamine can produce a number of allergy symptoms, including red or pink eyes. If you have allergic conjunctivitis, you may experience intense itching, tearing and inflammation of the eyes – as well as itching, sneezing and watery nasal discharge. You may also experience swelling of the membrane (conjunctiva) that lines your eyelids and part of your eyeballs, resulting in what may look like clear blisters on the whites of your eyes.

Irritation from a chemical splash or foreign object in your eye is also associated with conjunctivitis. Discharge tends to be mucus, not pus. Sometimes, flushing and cleaning the eye to rid it of the chemical or object causes redness and irritation. Signs and symptoms usually clear up on their own within about a day.

son of a bitch this blows so much, and I have a really bad cold

Look closely at rims of lids and see whether you have a little whitehead (or hair follicle that has some pus. )If so, you have a stye, altho pinkeye sounds more likely. Styes can itch, too.

gailcalled's avatar

@hairy; you are looking very buff, I must say : ) What’s your source? Some med sites are better than others.

Stuff12: a doctor can prescribe antibiotic drops if the infection is viral.

ppcakes's avatar

If you go to the drug store they have non perscription pinkeye drops, please remember if you have pink eye to always wash your hands and never touch the “not pinkeye infected eye” without washing your hands or sanitizing properly. if you wear make up and have used anything like mascara and eyeliner, throw it away, it is now infected and in no time you will have pinkeye in both eyes.

@ gal. Just from extreme fluthering.

sounds like its just bed soreness. take a shower and try not to touch it. periodically flush it with clean cold water. it sucks but dont rub it. it will go away soon.

gimmedat's avatar

Get pinkeye drops. Go to or call the doc. Don’t take chances of spreading and wash your hands all the time, don’t share towels or bed clothes. Pinkeye sucks!! I had so severly I missed a week of work, and I wasn’t even trying to be out! I had a huge allergic reaction to meds and BAM, in bed with swollen gross eyes for the whole time, not to mention huge opthamologist bills!

gimmedat's avatar

It is the opthamologist, right??

hairypalm's avatar

ophthalmology /oph·thal·mol·o·gy/ (of?thal-mol´ah-je) the branch of medicine dealing with the eye, including its anatomy, physiology, and pathology.ophthalmolog´ic. Yup.

hairypalm is going crazy with wikifever! Nice facts tho, now I’ll know if I ever get pink eye.

eambos's avatar

Ahh, another resource to add to my collection of infinite knowledge. Can never have enough sources.

Could be a stye. I get them from time to time they feel almost like a bruise and my eye gets watery and swollen and after a few days all that stops and it turns in to a little bump under my eye lid and in about a month it goes away.

annaott22's avatar

or you can go have it drained! I don’t trust needles or knives near my eye.

gailcalled's avatar

If if is a stye, and I think pinkeye sounds more accurate, there are techniques that you can and should use first. A month can be dangerous. Hot compresses, shampooing eyelashes w. baby shampoo and then Doc.

My sites; see above (4th answer) and this from NIH: stye say that you should seek treatment after a week.

I would suggest that you ignore syntak’s advice. I never heard of bed soreness that affects the eye. And remember, none of us are doctors.

Mother nature is trying to weed out the herd. She’s got her crosshairs on you.

Seriously though, I started to feel an eye irratation recently as well. The more I itched it, the worse it got. I finally stopped messing with it, and its almost completely healed 3 days later. Could also be allergies or some foreign object. Such to take a chance with the eye though.

I guess we have two of them for more than one reason.

hairypalm's avatar

Natural selection…..hahahha. If it keeps up just go see a Doc.

annaott22's avatar

How about that it’s spring time! I live in GA and my allergies are nuts! There is so much pollen that my dads car looks like it’s covered in mustard!

annaott22's avatar

By the way my doc said it’s fine to leave it for a month as long as it’s not swollen or red

gailcalled's avatar

@anna; maybe it is because you are so young. And mine were swollen, red and itchy. My doc had me applying compresses 4/5 x daily for a week. They (styes not compresses) stopped coming back when I started to use the baby shampoo regularly

babygalll's avatar

If there is a sandy feeling along with all you said then it’s pink eye. I just got it yesterday. You need to call in ASAP to get drops or it will get worse. It is VERY contagious, so be careful what you touch.

Gosh…great question for fluther. I never thought of asking something like this on fluther. So, since the forum is open, this pain in my chest, what should I do? Will Bufferin work or should I just get soem rest?

hairypalm's avatar

Sharp pain? When you exhale? tell me more.

trainerboy's avatar

Its right here, about two inches around…only hurts when I am conscious though.

hairypalm's avatar

O right there…....It’s just gas.

trainerboy's avatar

What do you think causes the blackouts for days?
I really appreciate this too…saves on medical bills! Is this an alternative to government health care or a prelude to what we can expect?
