ad-aware is good.

spybot search & destroy too…

A-squared has a free version.

If you are computer savvy than I recommend HijackThis

+1 to Spybot but also, do not forget good old Add/Remove to just uninstall the offending software. Also, it sounds like you have a toolbar for IE installed, see if there’s some branding on it (Like a company name or so) and see if it’s in the Add/Remove list otherwise use one of the above mentioned programs.

Another thing that can help in combating spyware and the like is using something like msconfig (Press the Windows key + R than type in msconfig and hit enter) to stop the program from running when you log into Windows and you can than more easily uninstall it.

Revo uninstaller should be used for programs that don’t uninstall easily; otherwise, I pretty much agree with the above. Also check out ClamWin anti virus; it’s free/open source, and does a decent job.

AVG(http://free.grisoft.com/) and Avast(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) both offer free to home users AntiVirus. I highly recommend both.

@byrd vnbtxlf toolbar is not something I installed.

I’d go with AVG for virus protection. Also run Spybot regularly to remove anything malicious on your hard disk. Both are free.

fortris, it doesn’t mean you personally installed it yourself, a lot of adware, malware, etc can manage to install itself, etc and that’s how it can end up in Add/Remove.

I gotcha, but it’s still on my comp after using sybot AND Ad-Aware.
