Gypsy jazz-inspired non-instrumental songs?

Asked by rjb1983 (158points) February 9th, 2011

Looking for folk, rock, etc. (with vocals) songs inspired by gypsy jazz structure, e.g., Em B7 Em B7 in 4/4, with accents on the 2s and 4s. I know there’s a German or French (?) song out there that’s been in a lot of movies and was very popular 3–4 years ago, but I can’t trace the name. The song starts out with the same word repeated several times, with the chord structure I mentioned. Any help would be appreciated!

This is all I’ve got for you.

It might be a good starting point for a search.

Again, I’m not knowledgeable enough in musical structure to know exactly what you’re looking for but these have gypsy/folk influences:

Rendezvous – Benoit Charest
Plea Bargain – Beat the Devil (now defunct)
Three LeggedDog – Firewater
Santa Marinella – Gogol Bordello
Kommienezuspadt – Tom Waits
Kontroll på kontinentet – Kaizers Orchestra
Fel Del Av Gården – Movitz (technically it’s hiphop swing-jazz but whose counting)

and electro swing

We No Speak Americano – Yolanda Be Cool
Catgroove – Parov Stelar
Get a Move On – Mr. Scruff
Farligt Monster – Analogik
Jolie Coquine – Caravan Palace

I love electro swing.

@fundevogel, thanks for your links – particularly liked Parov Stelar and Jolie Coquine!

Based on your picks, you might like Three Leg Torso
