Does having perfect blood tests mean you're in perfect health?

Asked by tan235 (877points) February 15th, 2011

I recently got all my bloods done, they all came perfect according to my doctor.
A full blood count.
My question is, ‘does this mean my body is in perfect health?’
I keep having annoying heart burn and erratic bowels.
I’m thinking ulcer or something, however she has passed a clean bill of health.
Could there be something else wrong that the blood tests just didn’t pick up that might explain my terrible tummy.
ps : Just in case you didn’t pick up, I suffer(ed) from anxiety.
I’m trying to give up.

Nope, blood tests don’t show everything. However, it is great that your blood tests came back perfect, and that’s a good sign that your general health is good!
Anxiety can absolutely explain your symptoms. Good luck.

They can’t test for everything in routine tests. And some illnesses don’t show up in blood tests. As @Mariah states anxiety can absolutely cause your symptoms but it wouldn’t hurt to run them by your doctor.

Anxiety, diet or even a virus (not necessarily ulcers) can be causes of erratic bowels and heartburn.
If it’s bothering you enough (and not resolved with over-the-counter remedies or changes to healthier eating habits…or maybe you already have excellent eating habits) you can always ask your doctor to recommend a specialist. A Gastrointestinal Specialist might be worth consulting if it’s really troubling you and/or your symptoms are not getting better over some period of time.

Like @Mariah points out – it’s pretty good news to have good blood test results…but a full blood count doesn’t necessarily tell you everything.

On the positive side, if your CBC (combined blood count) came back good, you’re likely not suffering from an ulcer. If you had a bleeding ulcer you’d likely have seen a dip in your hemoglobin (red blood cell) count.

Not necessarily, although blood tests give a good indication of overall health.

Thanks guys, I think my anxiety definitely has a role to play as no ‘normal’ person would ask this question, normal meaning balanced….. i mean seriously I feel like i’m looking for something sometimes.
I am getting a ulcer done just in case.

No, but they can be and are a fairly good, overall indicator of your general health and can indicate a number of common disorders. But there are all sorts of health problems that can’t be found or measured by blood tests, you might need bacterial cultures, urinalysis, x-rays or scans of some kind, there are a lot of tests. For example, a blood test certainly can’t tell you whether or not your leg is broken. And there are some health problems/illnesses/disorders for which there are really no tests currently available at all. If your blood work is normal but you still have symptoms of some kind or don’t feel well, then you and your doctor move on from there.

Oh Heaven’s no. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were that simple.

You can have a stomach that makes more acid than is comfortable. I don’t think this shows anywhere but how you feel, unless you have a test with a tiny camera stuck down there. There are a lot of otc tablets that soothe away an acid stomach, Tums, Rolaids, until you have a cause decided.

For years I have had migraine headaches.

Blood tests did not show this.

When i went to the hospital for a test , the nurse could not get the needle in my hand, so i have to go back to the royal gwent hospital to see the doctor

To answer your question, no. Because there are a hundred things to test for and they only do the major ones. If you want to get serious you will have to open your wallet, or be creative.
I just found out today from my first battery of blood test in my life that I may have a hyperactive thyroid which could explain a lot.
As for gastrointestinal, it could be many things: psychological, food allergy, bacteria issues-who knows except a good doctor, that’s the hard part
