Will I hate myself when fluther goes IPO?

Asked by markferg (1882points) February 28th, 2011

I tend to be on the trailing edge of things so I usually don’t have to worry about change, it’s as it is when I arrive. But now I find that Fluther is more new that I am used to and I’m beginning to find out information about members and I’ve obviously leaked personal info too. It’s beginning to become personal, should I leave or will the ride be worth it in the end? I don’t like having online ‘friends’, it just seems strange and open to abuse. What to do?

Well, that’s your decision. I hope you won’t though.

Notice what a supportive community we have. Moreover, we flag the trolls, scam artists and the generally suspect. So, please stay.

Check out this, from yesterday. A collection of TLC for our beloved @Jeruba, who just broke her dominant hand. And her heroic responses, which also happen to be literary, amusing, original, reminiscent of Chaucer and bldy amzng.

If you want to take more precautions, close your account and open a new one with an untrackable username, such as @code42

Follow one simple rule and you’ll be fine: Say nothing here you wouldn’t repeat in real life.

Oh – and worship Milo at all times.

Remember, the lurve you take is equal to the lurve you make.

That’s an interesting perspective, @markferg. Not wanting to get too attached to something that is starting to get personal, plus it breaks a rule of yours (not liking to have online friends).

You know, of course, that no one can tell you if the ride will be worth it. I’m sure that a hundred jellies would tell you it’s worth it for them.

I’m not clear on what you mean by fluther going IPO. Are you talking in a personal way—as if it goes IPO for you? Are you talking literally, as if it will go public some day?

Those of us who have stayed obviously believe it is worth it and we aren’t bothered by the idea of becoming known here. People who leave clearly didn’t get enough out of it to stay. Why do you think having online friends is strange and open to abuse?

I don’t think I understand what you’re asking.

It is worth it to me.
Fluther really does have an exceptional community of wonderful, genuine people. That is what makes it as great as it is. Of course, I can only speak for myself. As @wundayatta said, no one can say whether or not you will feel the same way. However, I suspect your willingness to open up here speaks volumes about your initial perception of the community here, and I think it may lean toward the positive – as it does for many of us.

Why are online friends more open to abuse than friends anywhere else? Genuine question. I agree with the advice from @cprevite that you shouldn’t share anything here that you wouldn’t elsewhere.

@Mz_Lizzy – Perhaps that was taking it a bit far but trolling and fake online personae do seem to be on the rise. I don’t think that I’m the sort of person to get dragged into that but I thought I’d just throw it in as see what comes back! – Might have got a, “I had a fake online boyfriend who was a Nigerian General, we were going to move in together and live off the $5M dollars he had found lying in a forgotten corner of the Nigerian National Bank, and it cost me $2000, and then he disappeared. I wonder if he’s still OK, and if we could get back together again. Boo, hoo.”

lol.. hmm you have such a fertile imagination :-) Well I imagine there are many fake people on the net, but I think with fluther, it would be hard to maintain it, don’t you? And really… if you are having fun talking to that fake Nigerian General, as long as you don’t run off to Nigeria to meet him… does it matter? Personally I am much too lazy to invent a persona for the Internet and I have an alzheimers brain I think and I would forget the details I made up and get myself in a real pickle.

@Mz_Lizzy – mmm, real pickle…

Or perhaps worse… fake pickle!
