Why do I have no appetite suddenly?

Asked by taytaysafreak (244points) March 10th, 2011

I’m on the slimmer side of average weight for my size (5’6”, 116 lbs.)
I usually eat….well, not a LOT but a healthy amount of food.
Lately, I haven’t been able to eat much at all.
I haven’t had much of an appetite, either.
Yesterday at work I got a chicken quesadilla and could literally only finish one slice. Normally I’d eat the whole thing but that one slice made me feel STUFFED. It felt like I ate a three course meal. I almost threw up.
Nothing tastes good any more. It kind of feels like I’m losing my ability to taste, as odd as it sounds.
I keep trying to eat regardless of how awful it makes me feel because I know I have to. It’s getting harder though.
What could this be? What can I do?
I also feel exhausted every day, even before the appetite loss.
I eat healthy and sleep as much as I need to.

Sounds like you had better see a doctor.

Make an appointment with your doctor.

…What we say three times is true, @taytaysafreak – do go and see a Doctor. The feelings you describe could be something trivial, or really not. No point in leaving it, the sooner the better. Good luck

This could be the beginning of the flu or a symptom of something much worse. It could be depression or cancer. Nothing to mess around with and the possibilities are all over the board. Please see a doctor then come back and tell us what he or she says!

“What can I do?”

You can see a doctor rather than seeking medical advice from strangers on the Internet.

I had those symptoms when pregnant. I would go to a doctor.

I am with the others who have written here. A doctor, especially one you might already know, will be able to help you figure out if this is nothing or something, and if something, what to do.

It depends for how long this has been going on. If you are worried or stressed it will affect your appetite but it should pass. If it doesn’t see a doctor.

Definitely sounds like the beginning of an illness. Make an appt. to see your doctor and then write down exactly when the appetite symptoms started, and if they were accompanied by any other symptoms (nausea, tiredness, weird tastes in your mouth, any kind of pain etc) It could be all sorts of things from minor to serious. Just get checked out. Make sure to let the doctor know what meds you take and if you have changed any of those or added any new ones (including OTC meds, vitamins or supplements) and if you are under any new type of stress or think you might be depressed (or pregnant).

A few questions before it’s “omg go to the doctor! you’re sick, you’re pregnant, you’re dying!

How long have you had no appetite?
How old are you?
Have you been drinking anything?

Went to the doctor, ran some tests-it’s a mix of anxiety and depression. _

@taytaysafreak Has the doctor made any suggestions for you on how to deal with your anxiety and depression. Did you kind of already know you were suffering? I hope everything’s ok with you in life. Please feel free to share with us, if you think you want to talk about it.

Well, I knew about my anxiety and my depression but I didn’t actually FEEL anxious or worried. I’m always at ease. I was told it was subconscious. Thank you all for your support. :)

@taytaysafreak: Did the doctor do elementary bloodwork or any other tests? Or did they just decide that you are losing weight, lethargic, and have no appetite because of “subconscious” anxiety and depression?? What kind of doctor did you go to?

Frankly, I would not myself be very satisfied with such a response from an MD, if I were sufficiently worried about these symptoms. Perhaps get a second opinion if you can. My first thoughts upon hearing “no appetite, losing weight, exhausted” are DIABETES but I am kind of primed to think extra about that… (And it could be many other conditions as well).

I’ve been going through this exact feeling since a few months before the time you made this post. Problem is, nothing has changed. The sentiment of “Nothing tastes good any more” is accurate. Slowly but surely tase goes away, eating food becomes a chore. Taking care of your body becomes unimportant. It’s easier to just starve, especially when food no longer tastes like it used to. Your favorite things in life become bland, and eventually you go into this revolving cycle of binge eating with no pleasure to starving yourself and back again to repeat. The kicker is this makes you gain weight too, rather than losing anything. I wonder what subconscious thought prompted this in you. I sincerely hope you found a solution and that this no longer plagues you, cause this non-existent lord knows I’m still looking for one myself.
