What are the lowest and hightest IP adresses?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) March 11th, 2011

I am helping to set up a ethernet network, and using an IP scanning program to find the active computerssto make sure the right ones are connected.

What are the IP addresses at the bottom and highest levels? like, what would be the very first one that would possibly be sent out and the very last one to be sent out when connecting to any kind of network.

Thanks.

If you are talking about private IPv4 addresses, not the public ones on the Internet, there are three ranges.

10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

You may be interested in other ranges, but those are important to know.

@jaytkay great! I can put 172.16.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 right?

The answer depends on how your network’s DHCP is set up. If you don’t know what that is or how to check on it, then I highly recommend that you run to your local bookstore or library and read the first few chapters (at least) of this book – getting a decent grounding in the fundamentals and having such a book handy for reference will save you much heartache and many headaches.
