Is it possible to record in HD with the HD PVR with just a standard definition TV?

This is for recording Xbox 360 gameplay. I was planning on buying a HD PVR but dont know if I can record HD with a standard defintion TV

The TV should not matter, provided that you plug the Xbox into the DVR as the video source rather than going through the TV.
