Asked by silenceiswar (125points) March 28th, 2011

Do you think that white pride can be classified as racist? What do you think about “white privilege”? Thanks.

I don’t think about it at all. Every person on earth has DNA that originates in Central Africa. I’d much rather talk about African pride.

mrmijunte's avatar

Well, what do you think about Brown Pride? Nothing wrong to be proud of your origins, but do not be surprised if people equate this with racism and ignorance because 99% of the time, that would be the case. In my eyes I would rather be proud of the country I’m from than the color of my skin.

I only think of Human pride, after all we are all the same race, the human race! We should stand by one and other!

tigerlilly2's avatar

It’s a product of ignorance.

silenceiswar's avatar

Indeed. Thanks for the answers!

Pride in anything that you have no control over is pretty much retarded. For the most part. Hell, I don’t even really care all that much.

Seelix's avatar

Pride is one thing; the idea of supremacy or superiority is quite another.

DominicX's avatar

That it’s bullshit. Black pride was created as a means of uniting black people against discrimination. White pride was created as a reaction to black pride.

Now, some would argue that black pride is no longer needed or that to have pride in something you can’t control is stupid in the first place, etc. but the fact of the matter is that white pride and black pride are not the same and did not arise for the same reasons.

I’d ask why you’d even bring it up—it’s all American culture is about anyway. Why do we need MORE white pride / affirmation than what we’ve got?

What we need is more minority pride / affirmation in our culture.

silenceiswar's avatar

@electra

I’m bringing it up because I’d like to know people’s opinion of it. We don’t need anymore “pride” than what we have already got.

less than a century ago Irish people were not considered white by the Census Bureau, so, shaky at best. White is such a broad term with a constantly changing meaning. If you are proud of your origin, maybe at least be more specific, like “Welsh Pride” or “French Pride” or “Mutt Pride” etc. it’s a lot harder to confuse it for racism.

12Oaks's avatar

I’m white. I’m proud. I’m 100% American. Hardly racist.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@12Oaks You may be caucasian. However with new DNA studies, no one is “white” any longer. According to this rule, we’d now all be considered black.

troubleinharlem's avatar

@SpatzieLover : Ohhh, that’s pretty neat.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@troubleinharlem hello sister! :) We can now say that for real

12Oaks's avatar

@SpatzieLover With all due respect, I’ll just go ahead and keep considering myself white without shame. That rule is interesting, as is the five second rule.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@12Oaks There is shame though, whether you feel it or not.
I have great pride of my heritage and ancestry. Amazingly, in this country I have no background in slavery. I doubt the same can be said of my family life in various “old countries”. especially Italy

12Oaks's avatar

@SpatzieLover What’s a shame? I’ll be honest, I really have little interest of my past relatives from some time back. I hate it when, for some reason, I get blamed for actions they may or may not have done that I had absolutely no control over. Let’s just say my great great great great something or another was John Wilkes Booth. So what? I had nothing to do with his actions and should feel shame for his own free will. Sure, what he did was unforgivable, but blaming me for his actions just makes no sense.

For the record, my mom did do genealogy and went way back to the early 1800s, and there is no record of slavery in my family, neither. But even if there was, it had nothing to do with me.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I take pride in the fact that I’m a Mutt. I’m Irish, German, Indian, Black Dutch, and probably a few other things.

12Oaks's avatar

Edit on my last post. If Booth were an ancestor of mine, I shouldn’t feel shame for his actions I had nothing to do with.

sometimes your mind goes faster than your typing and critical errors like this are made.

Most of the people I meet who assume that white pride is inherently racist grew up comfortably middle class and had a university education paid for by mommy and daddy.

They don’t speak for me or for the thousands of other white people who grew up in poverty and had to work for everything they had. Why the fuck shouldn’t we have pride in who we are? What else do we have? If someone assumes that that’s racist, that’s their hangup, not mine.

Also the idea that someone should feel shame for the actions of one’s ancestors is as retarded as the notion that someone should feel shame based on their race or sexual orientation. All of these things are beyond one’s control.

SpatzieLover's avatar

All of these things are beyond one’s control. It’s within your control to make life better for the impoverished and the uneducated…no matter their color or race.

White pride is racist

12Oaks's avatar

@SpatzieLover Is pride in any ethnic background racist (Chinese pride, Japanese pride, Irish pride, Palestinian pride, Baltic pride, ets.) or is it just white people, like myslef, who are the racists?

SpatzieLover's avatar

There are no “white” people. Pride in a culture is one thing. As @DominicX stated above, white pride is a negative reaction to the black pride movement.

DominicX's avatar

@syzygy2600

“White pride” exists only as a reaction to black pride. I’ve never met someone who spouted “white pride” who didn’t also add “if black people can have pride, why can’t we?” That to me shows that it’s not about actual pride in how light your skin is, but simply a reaction to black pride.

Also, if it’s retarded to feel shame in those things, why is it not also retarded to feel pride in those things? Having light skin is not an accomplishment. Why should one feel pride in it? (The same could be argued for black pride and gay pride, of course). The difference between them is why they arose in the first place, however.

12Oaks's avatar

@SpatzieLover I’ll disagree because, well, I’m a white person who’s not ashamed of that fact. But that’s OK, not really worth arguing about. Would be like arguing hair color or fingernail length, almost beyond pointless.

DominicX's avatar

@12Oaks

So anyone who doesn’t have “white pride” is automatically ashamed of being white? Not having pride in something you didn’t accomplish is not the same as having shame in it.

12Oaks's avatar

@DominicX “So anyone who doesn’t have “white pride” is automatically ashamed of being white?” Of course not.

syzygy2600's avatar

Just because many people who spout off about white pride are racist doesn’t mean that everyone who says they have white pride is racist.

I’m a white Canadian of predominantly Irish heritage. However, I’ve never been to Ireland, didn’t grow up there, and feel no special connection to Irish culture. I am proud to be Canadian, but thats a nationality, not a race. If I choose to say I have white pride, that’s my choice, and only I can determine what that means to me. To me it means ‘yeah I’m white, don’t think you can assume things about me because I am, I have no reason to be ashamed of who I am, fuck off’

It has nothing to do with putting down black people, to me. I can’t speak for everyone.

TexasDude's avatar

There’s a reason why I tacked on “for the most part” at the end of my answer. I recognize that the idea of pride is used as a tool of liberation for some groups. Just wanted to throw that out there in case anyone misunderstood me. @Seelix‘s response is more along the lines of what I meant.

sugabelly's avatar

I think white people should be proud to be white. Just as I as an Igbo Nigerian am proud to be Igbo or a Chinese person is proud to be Chinese.

However, the only problem is that White people as a GROUP have a noted history of elevating simple ethnic pride to ridiculous proportions to the point where it becomes arrogance and delusions of superiority and grandeur… and this of course, is how they randomly decided they were going to go around the world and mess up the lives of everyone who wasn’t White.

Maybe that’s why the rest of the world is wary of you.. nobody knows if the five minutes madness was really only for five minutes. I’m guessing people wary of “white pride” are only pragmatically cautious in case it comes back.

That little detail aside, please carry on being proud of yourselves. You are human beings after all and there is much to celebrate in our numerous ethnicities.

@syzygy2600

Actually, Spanish people are white. So that argument fails…

syzygy2600's avatar

@DominicX That depends on who you ask. According to some people Irish and Italians are not white. According to liberal douche bags, white people are “people with little pigment in their skin who it is ok for me to hate.”
