Paying back your Louisiana TOPS?

Asked by loothegr8 (100points) March 30th, 2011

Is Louisiana now making students pay back the TOPS (Tuition Opportunity Program for Students) money if they don’t follow the “guide lines” once in College? I had to drop a few courses due to personal/work related reasons so now I am not a full time student. I know I will not receive TOPS next year because of my decision but my mother told me I have to pay the money back.
Has anyone else heard of this?

Here’s the document that should explain it. TOPS Rights and Responsibilities

It sounds like you have to register as a full time student each semester, but the requirement is to complete 24 credit hours for the year, with a 2.3 GPA. There are exceptions made to the cancellation policy, if you have a reason why you didn’t make the 24 credit hours. It doesn’t say anything about paying the money back, but it does say you lose the ability to get it for the next school year. It may be possible to go to summer school and make up the credit hours; it would probably be worth calling them to see if this is the case.
