Who would like to see a "Following members" count on questions?

Asked by RareDenver (13173points) April 2nd, 2011

We have both “Observing members” and “Composing members” wouldn’t it be fun to see how many “Following members” a question has?

Observing members: 0 Composing members: 0

I think about that almost every day. The challenge is that it takes time and money to create a new enhancement. So, let’s brain-storm on building a business case. We may (or may not) find out that there is value in it.

Pro: It would help to know how many people are still following an old question before posting a response. Con: Then again, it is still out there if someone searches for a related topic and when building a new question with similarities.

Pro: A new award category could be created to award a jelly for having # number of followers. It might encourage quality questions. Con: I’m not sure how many people follow their own awards, much less are motivated by achieving them all.

Pro: It creates more statistics. I love statistics. Con: It’s one more statistic to clutter up the page.

@Pied_Pfeffer I think people would get a buzz out of seeing a question of theirs with lots of followers and what good is a website if it doesn’t reward you in some way? And as you say it would encourage Great Questions which I have always placed above Great Answers.

@Pied_Pfeffer Awarding for a number of followers is redundant. Quality questions are already rewarded by GA’s, along with the associated awards.

@PhiNotPi Is this true? There are many questions that I follow and do not contribute to by either answering or giving GA marks. I follow them because it is a topic I want to learn about.

I lurve this idea @RareDenver.

No. For me it is just more clutter and really irrelevant.

They should swap it for Composing members. That just leads to crappy responses so someone can be first.

I wouldn’t mind. I do follow a lot of questions that I don’t actively participate in. I still like “composing”, too, because it indicates that a question is really active.

@augustlan Thank you.

I started to craft a question today that had several suggestions to a very similar one. I decided to abort, but it would have been helpful to know if any of the questions still had followers at a quick glance. So many times, the OP and/or responders have left the thread.

Eh.

Would you like it if it rained money?

Pro: free money!

Con: it would suck if it rained coins.

And whom would you nominate to implement this change now that the entire tech staff has been hired away to Twitter?

I would also like to see how many Great Question’s each question has on the General, Social, etc. page where the questions are listed. Like this:

Can someone tell me what this stupid dream means?
Asked by StupidDreamPerson | 37 Great Questions | 6 responses

Just be a quick way to see if it’s something good.
