What type of business and how are you getting the word out about it?

Word of mouth is the best way. Get the couple of people that come to spread the word to other people.

Make up some flyers. Then you can get kids or friends to hang out on the sidewalk and pass them off to people. Or find public bulletin boards to pin them on. If you have a neighborhood newsletter or newspaper see about advertising there. Hopefully it’d be cheaper than going with a larger paper.

Just don’t leave any flyers under my windshield wiper, please.

I swear by my local Chamber of Commerce. When people move into town, the Chamber sends out a welcome packet full of info. from the businesses that are members. We also have monthly luncheons where we can network with each other—I’ve found new clients this way. Have you tried sendin a press release to your local newspaper? You can announce a grand opening or special promo this way, and if you tie it to a local event or charity, the paper might even publish a full story with photos—almost like advertising, but without the pricetag. The more people see your name and your face, the more they’ll come to trust you and think of you first when they need whatever it is you provide. Good luck!
