How do you feel about Sherry Turkle's Work?

Asked by sushilovinfun (161points) May 6th, 2011

I am embarking on studying cultural identity and social media and I stumbled on the work of Sherry Turkle. Before I read all of her work, I am wondering if there are any opinions about her generally. Is she useful for the work that I am doing?

I have never heard of her, but her credentials are certainly impressive, and her latest book, Alone Together sounds fascinating. She’s very well credentialed.

Thanks for bringing her works up; environmental psychology is interesting, and as “third place space” moves into the virtual realm, the psychological implications are going to be more and more important.

I have not read her works, but I heard an interview with her on NPR regarding her most recent work, Alone Together. There is no doubt that we have entered a brave new technological world. I share her concerns, but I think that we had better get used to it and adapt to the technological changes. The line between natural and man made is being crossed. We are creating a world that is largely in our own image, populated by robots and genetically modified organisms. Since there is no going back, we might as well contemplate how best to preserve our humanity.
