What causes non-period spotting when on the Pill?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) May 11th, 2011

My placebo pills start Sunday, and normally everything’s fine till then. But now I’m spotting for no apparent reason (I’ve taken the pill at the same time every day this pack) and I’m supposed to get laid this weekend. Any causes? Any way to make it stop till my period’s supposed to start?

According to this site, in some cases “for some women the low-dose pill doesn’t contain enough estrogen to maintain the stability of the endometrium, and breakthrough bleeding occurs.” (More info contained within the article.)

Damn, I guess that’s it. I’m on yasmin. Terrible timing!

@syz is right. Might be time to start on a stronger pill.

I don’t want to scare you but look here:

I don’t know the site though.

It hasn’t happened since Thanksgiving, so until it’s more regular I think I’ll stay put. Thanks for the links, @flo !

If it happens again, check with your doctor. My doc’s general rule is that if it happens two months in a row a different prescription may be in order.

What the others have said regarding the appropriateness of the prescription is probably the culprit. How long have you been on Yasmin?

I had to try about 5 or 6 different types of pill over the years before I found one that really worked for me and didn’t give me any side effects like spotting, headaches, cramps, etc.

If it’s just a little spotting, that shouldn’t stop you from gettin’ bizzay… it just means your partner might be a little averse to venturing down there up close and personal-like.

Haha thanks @Seelix. It’s just no fun to not sleep naked. Yasmin is my third pill, and I’ve been on it for three years. I otherwise love it: totally predictable periods, cured my PMDD, and I haven’t gotten knocked up yet. If the spotting only happens twice a year I’ll stay put.

If you have been on this pill for three years and this is the first time it has happened that seems odd. Have you taken any other new medicines that might have diminished the effect of the pill this month?

I would give it another month or so to see if it happens again. If yuo’ve been on this pill without issue for so long, it could just be a weird, one-time thing.
