D-link dir-280 status light not on... why?

Asked by manuel_alarcon (299points) May 27th, 2011

hi, i have one of these little routers, and after a problem with my internet connection i unplugged the router. The other day, when the problem was solved, i plugged the router again, connected it but the status light do not turn on, and i cant enter the router administration. I modify my LAN settings, with my ip address as 192.168.0.100, my subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, my default gateway as 192.168.0.1 and my dns server to 192.168.0.1.
I plug the lan cable to the output ports in the router (i’ve tried all four) and the internet cable to the input port and nothing.
Maybe the router died…?

Is anything lighting up on the router? I not, yes dead

Or maybe the transformer/wall-wart.

no, the power, wan, and the connected port lights are on. but the status light should be on. I resetted it to configure it again, but the status light is off.

Sounds like it is dead.

I assume that your internet connection is not working.
Look on the back of the router, there should be a recessed button. Get a pen or some such and press this button in, and hold it for about thirty seconds. You may need to do this with the power lead unplugged. Unfortunately I can’t find any proper documentation for this device in English and D-Link’s website won’t admit that there’s such a thing as a “DIR-280”. Go DLink.
Anyway, you should have received a CD with the device when you bought it which should contain the manual for the device. The manual can tell you the correct reset procedure.
Here’s how I reset my D-Link device, which is a different model but probably works the same way:
1. Unplug the power lead.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds.
4. Wait another 10 seconds.
5. Plug in the power lead and wait for the router to reboot. This takes about 2 or 3 minutes to complete sometimes.

If this doesn’t work, then I’m sorry to say that your router is probably toast. I hope it’s still under warranty.

@koanhead my internet is fine and i’ve resetted my device several times, but the thing is that the status light went off. I use to think in this order: maybe the apparatus disconfigured, maybe the led is broke, and F*CK maybe I have to buy a new one.
I have a doubt: If I’m connected to a port in the device, but not an incoming internet connection, can I still enter the router’s admin? in theory i should be able to, but… cant get an IP from the router

Yes, that should work, but if you can’t get an IP address and resetting the router doesn’t help, then I’m sorry to say that device is dead and you’ll have to get another.
