Does the Bible mention anything against organ donations and providing payments to people who donate their organs?

Asked by manolla (795points) June 1st, 2011

Well, I do know that the selling of human organs is illegal in many countries all over the world and a lot of people have opposing views on the matter, personally I’m in favor of it, but would like to know if the bible says anything on this?

Interesting question. i found a website that seems to cover it but haven’t looked closely at the site so don’t know how reliable the information is

@perspicacious That is true, but it requires a diligent study, and this is what fluther is for, asking questions you have and sharing your knowledge, isn’t it?

@Stinley Thanks for the link, I’ve checked it really quickly, I’ll check it again latter to see if it has any useful details on the matter.

The bible does not mention organ donation specifically.

Given the number of churches that have organs, I’d say the Bible has no problem if someone occasionally donates one. ;-)

It is not mentioned but I don’t think God would allowed us to discover it and not use it.

Romans 14 22 happy is he who has no reason to judge himself for what he approves

If it’s good for then go for it and God will approve of it.

There was no concept of organ donation when the Bible was written.

I am opposed to organ sales. It puts too much pressure on the poor to part with their organs.

Organ donation should be something done voluntarily or using cadavers, and it should be available to anyone and everyone.

@marinelife

What about the sale of the organs of deceased loved ones? I expect that that’s where more of the pressure will be (rightly) directed.

I’m fully in favor of it being done in the open, rather than having a (likely) black market open up.

I don’t think people are allowed to sell your organs when you die ...

You either accept your body to be donated for science or to take some of your organs or you don’t

Sure it does.

Thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.Exodus 21:23–24

Basically, you get what you pay for. ;-P

The Halachic Organ Donor Society hods.org has lots of info from traditional Jewish perspectives, especially under the link labeled “Halachic Issues.”

@robmandu that’s a way of looking on things but when you need a liver and since you gave NONE how can you ask another to give it to you ? :P
Though the way of looking at it is nice ^^

I don’t believe the bible mentions organ donation; I don’t think their medical knowledge was that advanced.

People use some of the old testament laws regarding the consumption of blood as a reason not to get transfusions or oragan donations.
You can use the Bible to justify just about anything.

It may not fall under the category of an organ but, apparently Adam donated a rib.
