What's App contact list question?

In order to receive messages from another What’s App user, do I have to have them installed as a contact within my phone, or would I still receive messages? What I’m wondering is if the capability to receive a message is removed if you remove the contact.

I don’t have the app on my phone, unlimited texting, but you have to have the app and their full (10 digit ) phone number..
It is a bridge, if you will, to connect different phones without SMS.
