Is there a way to differentiate between gas pain and something more serious?

Asked by minniemau5 (432points) June 9th, 2011

I woke up with severe pain in my entire abdomen. It hurts to stand up straight and I have to walk kind of bent over because it feels a bit better. The pain is sharp, stabbing and throbbing and I’ve had it for about 4 hours now. I’m wondering if it’s just gas pain because I know how painful that can get… but I’m going to the bathroom normally and as embarrassing as it is, I can pass gas normally. The pain is still there and it doesn’t feel any better after I go to the bathroom. I have to work in 2 hours and I don’t know if I should call in sick and go to the hospital or just stick it out if it’s only gas.

If you can defecate and pass gas, and it hasn’t relieved the pain, then you may have something else going on. Give your doctor a call.

is it to the right hand side of your body? Does it hurt whe you release it after you have pressed it in? If so get checked out at the docs for appendicitis (sorry about the spelling). If not and the pain continues it could be gastroenteritus (again sorry about the spelling)
If you think you can make it through the day, try to get an appointment for after work

Buy some GasX and take it immediately. If you are no better in 20 minutes, go to the ER or to your physician.

Four hours seems to be extensive for normal gas pain. This sounds a bit more serious and I’d call out and see a doctor. It could be anything but doesn’t sound like normal gas pain.

I had GasX and took it two hours ago, and still having pain. It really hurts when I stand up or sit or lay down straight, I have to keep bending over. :/

Time to visit the doctor. Don’t take a chance – this is our one and only life.

Yeah, I’m going to agree that that doesn’t sound much like normal gas pain to me. Get it checked out – better safe than sorry.

We discovered even the hospital can’t tell the difference. My Daughter-In-Law went to the emergency room with terrible pains, (twice) and they told her both times it was gas. Finally she insisted she wasn’t leaving until they found out what it really was, and they discovered gall stones, which required extensive treatment.
