Who cares what the president eats?

Asked by josie (30934points) June 16th, 2011

Regarding this Huff piece

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/neal-barnard-md/obama-health-food_b_870853.html

Long ago, I got tired of people telling me what I should or should not do for my (or my family’s or anybody else’s) own good.

Where I used to live, a woman in the neighborhood would actually check out the garbage bins at the curb and leave little notes if there were recyclables in it.
My neighbors once got on me because my kids did not wear helmets when they rode their bikes.
Others did not like the fact that I own a couple of guns (locked in a safe, ammo locked in a separate box in the safe, by the way)

And here we a go again. The national press being a nosy neighbor in the internet community.

I do not like the president at all, but come on!

Since when does the president have to be the National Shepard. If you don’t like him, don’t vote for him. But having elected him, don’t tell him what to do. Shut and wait for the next election!

I don’t care at all what the president eats. I also don’t mind at all that the first lady is trying to influence families to eat better. It is amazing how many people in America really have no idea what they eat is horrid, and that they are fat because of what they eat.

The thing is, eating healthy overall doesn’t mean you can never have an ice cream again. No one should be under a microscope about these things, it’s ridiculous.

I don’t know but I think it is a legitimate beef here. When you have his wife the First lady championing her anti-obesity campaign—“Let’s Move” BO is hardley setting a good example here.

Imagine you being a kid today and getting this message of eating healthy and “Let’s Move” and maybe even saying to themselves…“I get it and I will try that”.

In the next breath these same kids see the President scarfing on yummy delicious greasy burgers. Yeah I say make a stink about this double standard especially when it is coming straight from the top.

@Cruiser But her message is not that peoplemhave to be perfectly strict all of thentime aout what they eat. She is just trying to inform people what is healthy eating. My guess is the president mostly eat healthy foods, look at him. If the press is going to haunt him to catch him eating a greasy burger then they should also show all the salads, grilled fish, and other menu items he consumes. It is biased and trying to pusposely make the president and first lady look bad, like hypocrites and untruthful when it is not the case. Obama has talked openly talked about hamburgers he loves at some little joint in DC, and other foods. Not to mention America is unhealthy, so it is irresponsible for the public health for media to misrepresent this.

People are not listening to the first lady’s entire message, they are picking, choosing, and editing.

@JLeslie Maybe we will just have to disagree. If we were talking about Brad Pitt and Angelina presenting these mixed messages I wouldn’t think twice, but we are talking about the Prez here and both my 12 yr old and 15 yr old spoke of the confusion presented by this double standard.

You just can’t eat crap like that and live a healthy life and lots of people don’t realize this until they are on cholesterol medicine or having a grabber. Think about it…we have a President who smokes and eats crap for lunch…hardly an image of this healthy lifestyle his wife is attempting to sell to the public.

@Cruiser How about I agree he should eat that bad stuff at minimum in hiding, if at all, during the 4 or 8 years in office?

Do you fault the media at all? The first lady really has said over and over and over again, a yummy treat every so often is fine, in moderation.

OK then @JLeslie….but I still think a ¾ lb. greasy burger, fries and a coke is anything but a “yummy treat”! ;)

@Cruiser I just want to be sure you know I am not mocking in any way. I am serious that he should realize he is under scrutiny, there is some disconnect between talking about health and then being caught eating healthy food. I thought the same about Clinton, he should have stifled his cheating ways for the 8 years.

@JLeslie And I want you to know I am not just picking on the President with this easy target @josie provided for sake of bitching about our Pres. Our country is so devoid of good examples for our kids and it would be a nice change to see our countries leaders step up and set good examples and stop fucking up so much with having affairs, sexting and scarfing crap in the public eye.
