Good match for a young German Shepard?

Asked by kb12345 (435points) July 31st, 2011 from iPhone

I have a 14 month old German Shepard that I love dearly. He is a Shepard though so he has all the energy in the world. Were thinking about getting him a friend… What kind if dog would be a good match that isn’t too crazy but could still have fun and keep eachother company?

go mini-dachshund! Although they tend to have a top-dog complex, it’ll be nice to keep with the German dog theme!

Or a labrador.

No chihuahua!

A wild 14 month GSD might trample a little dog. Unless you really want 2 dogs in your house, I would find a friend for yours to play with at a dog park.

2 dogs are twice the expense, twice the work and not necessarily twice as much fun!

I think you should look beyond a specific breed and find a dog that has the energy that matches your dogs energy. Consider whether you want another big dog, medium or small and go from there. Get in contact with a rescue and tell them about your dog and about his personality. They can help you meet and greet a few dogs that they think might be a good match. I’ve fostered and worked with many dogs, different breeds and sizes, and I can tell you it’s all about the personality. The important thing is that your dog feels comfortable with the new dog you decide on.

I have two big dogs and I agree with @rooeytoo. Having two dogs is a lot of work and a lot of responsibility so be absolutely sure that you’re okay with that before you decide on getting another dog. I love my two big boys but sometimes they make my life a bit harder than I would like it to be.

The last three dogs I have owned have been GSDs.
They need exercise more than anything but if you really think a companion dog is needed get another German Shepherd Dog A little dog will have a harder time keeping up with one.
Another thing to consider is how well trained your dog is now.
If not,it will be that much harder to deal with if you bring another untrained dog into the mix.
The one I have now has an incredible amount of energy and the only thing that controls that is a lot of exercise.
Yesterday for example, she swam for hours non-stop and was up and down a steep hill too.She did not get tired.
Here is a typical example of her energy level.

I have two dogs, one of which is a German Shepherd. I agree with everything stated above—a second dog is more work and they BOTH have to be trained (and it is hard to train the second if the first isn’t trained).

While I disagree with a good bit of Caeser Milan’s dog thinking, I completely agree with him on acknowledging and meeting your dog’s exercise requirements. A second dog does not get you off the hook for several walks a day with a GSD.

I’ve grown up with two large dogs and had always have 2 in the house. I’ve already been through the expensces and responsibility of having two so I know what to expect. He’s exercised many times a day which is why he is so mellow at night. I just wasn’t sure if I should get a friend with more or less energy.

I’m a big advocate of mutts.

Go to your local shelter and give one of those disenfranchised critters a home.

Take him with you to the local animal shelter and let him help you pick out the dog. I think it is more important to get a dog he will readily accept than one with a set energy level.

I’m a purebred lad myself. Go to a local breeder and get a pup that the 14 month old can mentor!

I only have a purebred dog because we rescued him!!! My family have always been all for mixed breeds but having him around has kind of changed our idea on pure dogs. We’ve gotten every pet at our shelter but this guy we found in terrible conditions on the street. I honestly think a pup would do well though..
