If Milo has an occasional brief sneeze, is it something to worry about?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) August 4th, 2011

Since Monday I have been noticing that he is sneezing .. once every few hours or so, at least when I am in earshot. There is a small spray of clear droplets from his nostrils. ( I have had some allergy-relating sneezing also.)

Other than that, he is relaxed, calm, content, and continues to alternate frenzied mad dashes with nap, pre-nap naps and post-nap naps.

He is drinking, eating and pooping normally. And he seems to still spring onto high surfaces with little effort, is happy to attack my hair scrunchies, and is manifesting almost no aggressive behavior. And he is hunting normally as well. Should I be concerned?

I have 7 cats, and they all sneeze on occasion. As long as they don’t have a discharge or runny nose it is most likely just dust

I have Catgut, Boo, Bea, Kathy, Dark Matter, socks and Mary

As long as you don’t see eye secretions and notice thick mucous coming from those sneezes, Milo should be fine.

Didn’t you ask this once before? I think we decided maybe he has some allergies.

Cat sneezes are one of their small but not negligible contributions to our entertainment.

Cats can get URIs, and if Milo gets one, you’ll probably be pretty sure he has a cold. If my cat had the symptoms you describe, I would not be concerned.

Nope. Everyone sneezes sometimes, kitties included. If his behaviour changes or if he shows symptoms like @tinyfaery described, it’s time to take him to the vet. But otherwise, he’s fine.

@tinyfaery: This is the first sneezing episode I personally have noticed and thus asked about. I am happy, however, that someone else had the same issue.

Thanks, everyone. I too am sneezing occasionally. The pollen count is high and, due to no rain, there is dust everywhere.

Part of the amusement factor is the expression on his face after the little pouf.

Are you sure? I think you should look back through your questions.

@tinyfaery: I no longer am sure of anything, but his recent sneezing seemed a new issue to me. And my daughter says that I have not asked her about this ever.

Who knows? I no longer ever trust my memory. You may be right.

The vet called back and said that cats have allergies here at this time of year and just to keep an eye on things for another week. No greenish discharge, no sluggish behavior or lack of energy and appetite means that everything is fine.

I have been sneezing my head off this week also. But I am not logy, lazy, off my food or discharging green stuff either.

Milo here; The vet today said, once again, that I am the poster cat and that Gail is doing a masterful job of attending to my needs. And the sneezing is simply a little August hay fever. (Gail is also sneezing due to pollen in the air. So again, we are really compatible.)

I behaved beautifully, even sneezing on cue, until the vet tried to cut my nails. Then I showed him who’s who. But he brought in his nurse so they outweighed me; 305 lbs to 11 lbs. 10 oz. It seemed a very unfair fight, so I felt obligated to throw up in the carrier on the way home.

All in all, a very satisfying day, I must say.

Oh, Gail. I wish I could give you one of my cats so you can experience what it’s line to have a good kitty.

@tinyfaery: Forget your cats. I need you here, as I’ve said on many occasions.
