What does it mean when Wikipedia says "the historic City Of Blahbity-Blah"?

Asked by Aethelflaed (13752points) August 8th, 2011

What exactly does this “historic” mean? That this city meets some requirements for historicalness, or just that the city has existed in time before you read this Wikipedia article?

Usually it means the city was mentioned in a historical account of some sort.

@YARNLADY And by historical account, that could be a paper article on the cities groundhog population 5 years ago?

That a city has historic buildings or monuments, or that a big historic event happened there in the past.

Whoever from the city that edited the article in Wiki wanted to make it sound more exciting.

What it comes down to, especially in a “peer” edited site like wikipedia, is whatever the author chose to use as a definition.

Example: The historical town of LaBor, Oklahoma no longer exists, and the burial ground of my ancestors there is paved over by I 35. My family established a town there after the Trail of Tears relocation by the U. S. government. The surviving members today are trying to get compensation from the Government for the desecration of the burial ground. The veneration of ancestor burial sites was never a tradition of our ancestors, but since the Government has decreed that “Native Americans” are entitled to compensation, we will apply.
