Difference between career as a juvenile vs. adult probation officer?

Asked by livelaughlove21 (15724points) August 9th, 2011

I’m a college student hoping to work as a probation officer one day. During the summer of 2012, I’ll be participating in an unpaid internship at our Department of Probation and Parole working with adults. However, I’m planning on doing volunteer work in the meantime at our Department of Juvenile Justice in probation. So, I’ll be getting experience in both juveniles and adults, but I’m curious what the major differences would be between the two as far as the career would go.

I know the pay is pretty much the same, but what differences are there in day to day responsibilities? Google has been no help to me.

The main difference will be in the clientele. The juvies will grow up and you will not have to deal with them continually. In the Adult probation you’ll get to see the same people over and over again.

Based on my police experience and the experience of co-partners in the police world, an adult probation officer is a much better occupation.

Juveniles, for the most part, are much more repeat offenders, than adults as a comparison.

Your work load with juveniles will be much heavier, than with adults.

If your work load with juveniles will be much heavier than with adults, wouldn’t you surmise that working with the juvies will have more job security?
