On the computer, why am I being forced to listen to the CD's whole song?

Asked by flo (13313points) September 17th, 2011

I’m listening to CDs on the media player, (I’m searching for a song, so I just want to listen to the begining the middle and the end of each song, to save time. And with some CDs, it keeps boomeranging back to the beginning of the song forcing me to listen to the whole song. If it is not a purposeful thing by the artist, is there a way of keeping it from doing that?

…although I can’t imagine why any artist would want to not let people listen the way they want to, it is just my imagination.

I’d recommend using iTunes. I don’t have that problem?

As far as I know CD audio doesn’t have any measures to prohibit playback of a CD in any way (much different from DVD for example).

Any track of a CD is just indexed by starting time, you should be able to skip to any position inside a track. Unless the CD is dirty or cannot be read, I would expect problems with that, some CDs are “copy protected” though, which means that they do not conform to the CD standard, maybe thats a problem.

I’ve experienced that with some files on my MP. I don’t think it’s the MP itself, unless it happens on most of the files that you try to play.

Have you tried unloading the CD, closing, and then reopening your MP?

I had a downloaded file with that same problem, but now it works okay.

@flo You should be at the party going on in the Watering Hole chat room. It just started. Even if you don’t like chat, open it up in another window so we can have your name on the list.

@dreamwolf I wanted to see if someone else experienced it and solved the problem, thank you.

@alexlehm the artist not letting us skip, that was imagination going wild. But it was the only one CD among the 4 I listened to. And I tried many tracks, so it is odd. Not much difference among them all re. cleanliness. Besides it plays, just the whole song only.

@Brian1946 I tried removing the CD from the compartment and putting it back on, same thing.

@PhiNotPi I was there about twice or so, to get a fast answer, so and so came in, so and so left, that is all I see in the chat rooms, (except once I think someone answered my question) what is that about, you’re not chatting.

@flo There was seriously a party in the chat room. Here is a video of how many people were there. You must have missed it.

thanks for the invitation @PhiNotPi. Good to use the whisper format for anything off topic though
