Could you suggest a book about using psychology to trick people.

Asked by inunsure (423points) September 27th, 2011

Similar to what Derren Brown does but more in depth explaining how these tricks are done than any of Derren Brown’s books.

@abysmalbeauty :: Derren Brown does things like writing a number on paper and putting it in a persons pocket and getting ten people to give him random numbers and adding them up to equal the number he wrote down.

And he also convinces people to rob armored cars.

Oh, and this video might help. It explains how he does it at the end.

This is the book I ended up with after going down the same path. It’s for use in therapy sessions, but it gives you some ideas about technique.

*I thought “Mein Kampf” was a legitimate answer albeit slightly smart assed… Oh well?

Here’s the boring answer… “How to win friends and influence people.”

@GabrielsLamb , I read about a fundamentalist preacher who regularly pulled that mind reading trick on the congregation. He asked them to put requests in sealed envelopes. The preacher would secretly read the contents of the first envelope and then announce in advance the contents of each of the others, after which he would open it to confirm what he said.

The same thing can be done as a card trick. Palm one card and tell someone to pick a card, without looking at it, from the deck and announce in advance that it will be the palmed card. Then tell the person to choose another card and say that it will be the card that was just chosen. Finally, say that you are going to pick the value of the last card and choose the palmed card. Amazing how many people are fooled by this.

@LostInParadise I equate “Mind fuckery” to this… I believe that as many people feel that it can’t happen to them… It has been going on since the beginning of the advent of advertising.

Basically depending upon our personal thumbscrew and preferences… We are ALL stupid like this in one way or another. We all however also like to believe we as individuals are above the influence of it.

*Did you REALLY want that value meal supersized? Or did that commercial that you watched on Micky Deez in that carefully thought out and wellpaid for dinner time time slot influence you at all?

OoOoOoH follow the spinning hypno thingy!

Soo true. Advertising is an amazing form of mind fuckery, it’s a subtle way of traumatizing the soul….like using techno ♪♪ to make someone want to buy a new car….its fucking brilliant in it’s own way….
