A revisit to dry cat food: What do you feed your cat and why?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) October 2nd, 2011

Milo is content with the new grain-free Felidae, but it is hard to come by around here. I have to remember to order several weeks in advance. Are there any other comparable brands that you recommend? Price is no object. (Milo here: Let Gail eat PB and J.)

How is he doing on the grain free diet, I was thinking of ordering my cats origen cat food since the new puppy I am getting the breeder recommends a grain free diet. Mine are currently on Iams now but now rethinking it if they will be healthier

He is very happy on the grain-free. My only problem is the availability. I see that I can order it from Amazon if I allow myself enough lead time.

Here I get it from the local Agway but they don’t always have it in stock and only order from the warehouse every two week.

Canidae is easier to stock.

I just looked online where I buy the origen and they don’t carry Felidae but have several other grain free cat food options

@creative1: Thanks but I need some objective customer reviews.

I now use Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry cat food, in the chicken flavor. It’s grain-free. The cats didn’t have an issue with the change over. There is also a duck variety, as well as salmon.

I also gear Wellness now makes a grain-free product. Wellness is a lot more popular than Felidae.

@tinyfaery; I have read reviews of Wellness Core, I think, and people suggested that it might have caused urinary problems with their pets.

I’ll check out the Blue Buffalo and thanks.

(Gear’s looking at you, kid.)

We use Wellness. I researched for a while, and decided that one was of the best brands.

I feed my cats Purina One, the one for urinary tracts. I recently bought them a bag of Trader Joe’s out of desperation, because I could not get to buy the Purina One.

What is the advantage of grain free?

One of my cats has an issue with her urinary tract, so I am open to a different food. I used to feed them Delicat which I got from Costco, until the urinary tract issue came up.

@Facade: Which specific Wellness do you use?

@jca: Source

“Cats are obligate (strict) carnivores and are very different from dogs in their nutritional needs. What does it mean to be an ‘obligate carnivore’? It means that your cat was built by Mother Nature to get her nutritional needs met by the consumption of a large amount of animal-based proteins (meat/organs) and derives much less nutritional support from plant-based proteins (grains/vegetables). It means that cats lack specific metabolic (enzymatic)

@gailcalled Haha. I need the iPhone exception.

@gailcalled Complete Health. I think we bought the blue bag this time.

My cat didn’t like that brand. I feed mine Natural Balance Alpha, which really helped get her digestion on track. I picked it out because it has probiotics in it and we continue feeding it because she loves it. She purrs for it at mealtime! I also like it because the protein levels are considered “moderate”, and I think the other brand was too rich for her because of the high protein in it.
