Will you share your experiences with Overseas Humanitarian Work?

Asked by Praang (38points) October 11th, 2011

I want to know if anyone on Fluther has any experience doing overseas humanitarian work? I will graduating in May, and before I pursue a job or graduate school, I wanted to spend 3–6 months overseas doing some form of humanitarian work. However, I have NO idea where to begin. If you have any experience with overseas humanitarian work, will you tell me about your experiences, the organization you were part of, etc.

My teacher told me about it, he said when he came back to the U.S. from Mongolia he realized then how much advantage we take and how ungrateful some students are in the U.S.A. On the contrary my student friend went somewhere for humanitarian work. I think he came back and just continued to do beer pong.

I’d advise you to be careful of which program to pick. A large portion of the available programs are designed to give you a cool experience, rather than being designed to help the people who are actually in need. If you really want to help, you need to steer clear of these shoddy programs.

I suggest starting by picking an issue you think needs addressing. Teaching children? Providing protection against disease? Helping refugees? There are lots of areas you can work on. Find a few projects that deal with the issue and do some research. Find out which one will offer the most help, and which will be the safest for you.

As yet I’ve not done humanitarian work abroad, but it’s what I’m saving for after university. I hope to teach English as a second language, perhaps in Thailand or Cambodia. So far as groups to volunteer with, GVI have looked alright so far. They only set up projects that are sustainable in the long term, rather than just showing up, giving the first-world volunteers a good time, and then leaving. I still don’t know as much about them as I’d like to though.

I have kids to take care of right now, but when they are grown, This is what I would like to devote the rest of my life to. I have been thinking about going for years. I have done all the research.

I raised three children, and I worked in missionary type jobs in both the Philippines, and Africa, starting Both Homes and shelter’s for street children . I have strong Humanitarian aide & human resources experience. I have worked as a English Tutor,& Artist. I worked as a independent contractor for Missionaries as a program coordinator I have done this on and off for over 17 years, II became very skilled in soliciting funds, coordinating fund raisers, executing food ,clothing and medicine drives, and supervising the distribution of supplies, staff hiring ,and or recruiting for volunteers in times of extreme emergencies and there were many. I survived 4 coup DE Ta’s, 2 major earthquakes and one very HUGE volcano eruption, These were the most fulfilling days of my life and even an oppertuinty i would do it all again.
