What items do you wash before you use them and why?

Asked by Ponderer983 (6416points) October 23rd, 2011

I just realized after buying a new sheet set that I would not put them on my bed until I washed them. However, I never wash my clothes before I wear them for the first time. The reason for this – I have no idea! Are there items that you wash before you use them, and others you don’t? Is there a reason that compels you to wash one thing and not another?

Yeah. Clothes, sheets, plates, knives & sporks, pots & pans. They all get washed before the first time I use them.

Undergarments and anything that has to do with food.

I usually wash new bed sheets too. Add fabric softener to make it more comfy. Sometimes I will wash new clothes. I once read that clothes are often shipped around to different places and could be contaminated with stuff. I always wash new dishware before using them.

Somewhat related, but I always spray my new leather articles with a protectant before wearing them——shoes, jackets, etc. Gives them extra protection.

@HungryGuy Not so dirty after all, are we?

HungryGuy's avatar

@Ayesha – Nope. I’m actually kind’a a clean freak :-p

@HungryGuy Oops sorry, that’s just the imagination. Your hands are clean though :)

You should always wash clothes and sheets, towels (and other similar items) before you wear them. If they’ve come from a package, they have an ingredient called sizing in them to keep them flat and wrinkle free. Basically sizing is a preservative and it often contains formaldehyde. It’s not good for you, so you are expected to wash it out, before using your items.

If you are buying clothes that are not in a package, you should assume that at least one person, and often many persons, have tried on those clothes. So any icky stuff that was on those people are now on/in those clothes. And clothes, in stores, are often dropped on the dirty floor (even though you might not see the dirt).

And just about anything that you buy for the kitchen should be washed before using it. You have no idea how many dirty hands have handled those items.

Just about everything. I dislike the smell and feel of sizing/starch used on fabrics and the idea of how many people may have touch or tried on stuff. Easier to wash and enjoy.

Pots and pans, dishes and silverware. Food stuff.
Not clothes or towels. Not sheets.

Pretty much clothes and anything related to eating utensils. And of course, the foods that need to be washed- vegetables, fruits, etc. (even if they say “pre-washed.”)

If my body has to wear it of lay in it or if I have to use it to eat or cook stuff in. Then it is getting washed.
Only exceptions to washing clothing is if it is something like a coat or a wool scarf or hat or gloves.
Oh, pany hose don’t get washed before wearing either, but regular socks do.

Vegetables (because they might have pesticides on them).

I always wash every washable before I wear it. You never know what it might have on it, or who might have touched it.

I feel the need to wash new unused plastic eating utensils and styrofoam cups before I use them. The folks at work laughed at me for doing that.

@HungryGuy You have sporks?

Anything from a thrift store.

HungryGuy's avatar

@Symbeline – I like sporks. They’re really convenient :-p

I sometimes wash sheets before I use them because sometimes they just feel too stiff unless they’re washed first. I usually wash things from thrift stores before I wear them, but on second though, it doesn’t really make sense to wash them but not clothing from other stores. People try on things from Target and then put them back on the rack. Same thing really.

I always wash any kind of cups/plates/etc before I use them, regardless of where they’re from.

And grapes.
