What does one need to become an Apple Technician?

Asked by BoyWonder (811points) November 8th, 2011

I’m looking into becoming an Apple Technician (heard they make $150/hr). Now, how do I go about doing this? What formal training do I already need to have? What are the particulars?

Basically you pay Apple and pass their test. However you will probably not be earning $150 an hour. Google suggests its more like $40k a year starting out and I assume you’ll have to work more than 5 hours a week to earn that.

Great. Are there any links I could check out?

You might want to look around here. Be warned that the site is kinda messy to find what you need.

While Apple may be allegedly easier to use, they are no easier to repair. In fact, you need a little extra training just to figure out how to open the case. The hardware is not appreciably different from a PC, and OS X is just another Unix-oid OS, not entirely unlike Linux, so there really isn’t much in the way of Apple-specific skills; many computer repair people are equally good at both Mac and PC.

Accordingly, what you need to learn depends on what computer skills you have already, but the formal training s merely the certification test that @Lightlyseared mentions and @johnpowell links to.

Also, as has been pointed out, I would not expect to get $150/hour. That may be what the shop charges, but that isn’t what the techs earn. Rest assured that, while the machine shop I work at charges $200/hour, I personally make considerably less. You should not do this merely for the money; you should do it because you like working on Apple products.
