Avast killed my pc?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) December 6th, 2011 from iPhone

I updated avast, and restarted, and now my windows 7 pc won’t boot all the way, it stops before the windows starting animation, I tried a restore point by it failed, and one before that worked but it still won’t boot, it just goes to startup repair, what do I do?

Have you tried booting to safe mode?

Safe mode is fuclet too, I’ll just have to waste a bunch of time trying the repair install

Do you have a copy of Knoppix? You can boot off a CD with Knoppix, and it will allow you to go in and manually remove items from your startup list.

No, but I tried deleting all the program files and it didn’t work.

I did some digging, and I found what might be the problem. Avast released an update which incorrectly identified critical system files as trojans and deleted them, forcing thousands of people to have to reinstall Windows. This was in 2009, so I can’t be sure it’s the same problem, but it’s a possibility.

Well, got the new install, lost some stuff but now I’m setting it up again. Seriously, a fucking antivirus killing a computer, thats the opposite of their job.
