I’ve never been to Askville, but I can tell you that flame wars (of the petty, name-calling variety) are not allowed here; we have moderators who delete any message deemed flaming. We do have discussions, and they can get heated, but any blatant flaming will get moderated away.

I don’t know what’s this “assville”, but the moderation in this site is better than most Q&A sites. If anything, we need more brutal mods to weed out the filth.

The fact that I have never even heard of Askville, perhaps?

We have religious flame wars instead of political flame wars.

Welcome, @SQUEEKY2 !
They’ve pretty well said it already. moderation keeps the site civil barely, sometimes, but civil. It may make you nuts in the beginning, but it’s pretty nice to know that personal attacks and spammers are quickly dealt with. Blood does indeed flow here, but it doesn’t gush.

I was on Askville for quite awhile before coming here. There’s a lot less back-biting on Fluther. It’s not that we don’t have our ideological differences and our ego jousting at times, but the competitive element that’s structurally built into Askville doesn’t exist here. Nobody’s trying to come out on top, or trying to undercut others.

The “lurve” point system used here doesn’t carry the same weight that the scoring system on Askville had. Here it’s more like a virtual pat on the back or a thank you. Not something to get all worked up over.

The answers to questions here are a more cooperative effort. You can see what’s already been laid down, and add to it or discuss as you wish. We kind of build a multi-faceted answer as a community.

I poked my head back into Askville a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say that, even though there’s a much larger volume of Q’s there, the quality was pretty abysmal. It can get a bit sluggish here, but the mod crew works to keep the quality at a decent level.

I think it’s been nailed, above, but just to throw in my two cents…
The mod team makes a huge difference. Fluther doesn’t allow much crap. Spammers, trolls, personal attacks, general web ickiness is quickly removed. I can’t speak for Askville, or any other Q&A site, since I have only used Fluther… but we are a community here. We’re friends, and overall this is a group of really great people.
Also, as mentioned, “lurve” scores count for nothing. It’s more of a friendly way to show appreciation for one another, there is nothing competitive about it. Same goes for awards. There is no competition.
We do debate, and sometimes it gets heated, but you aren’t allowed to make it personal, here. The standards are set pretty high, which can be difficult to get used to, but ultimately makes the Fluther experience infinitely better.

We love pancakes here. AskVille simply can’t appreciate that.

@SQUEEKY2 Compared to AV, almost every single thing here is better.

The questions are real. The jellies (users) are intelligent, humorous, thought-provoking and relatable. The site itself is less cluttered, easy to navigate and easier to read.

The inside jokes of Fluther are easy to find, and hilarious/touching to go back and read.

When I officially made the switch from AV to Fluther, I hung out here for quite some time just reading old threads. It gave me some insight as to how the site worked and what type of people hung out here.

I had trouble figuring out a few things. Fellow jellies that had left AV prior to me were glad to assist, as am I.

If you search for things like Fluther Best Questions and read through several of the threads, you’ll have a better idea of what you’ve stepped into.

Welcome!
