What is the best way to add other relevant skills and interests to my resume that are not from work experience?

Asked by deni (23141points) February 9th, 2012

I do not have a section like this on my resume and I think I need one. I am applying for a baking job that does not require professional experience and I would like to have somewhere on there how much baking I do in my own kitchen. I’m sure there are other things I could list too…but what should I call the section, and how much detail should I go into about my experience and skills, whatever?

If you have a section like this on your resume, what other kind of things do you have in it? Is it normal to have this section? I assume it is, but I just wanna make sure it’s not weird because I really want this job, and I intend on talking to the manager when I go in but I want it to be on my resume as well for future reference. Help me? :)

I’m not sure which type of resume you’re using whether it was custom made by another person or if you’re using a Microsoft Office version or Works. Both Office (most versions) and Works allow you to add an interests/hobbies section on your resume. Another thing that you can do is to add these additional skills under any ‘additional’ or ‘other’ skills usually located on the bottom of most styles of the resume that Office or Works allows you to use.

Personally I usually add additional skills/interests/certifications not related to my work experience under the ‘additional skills’ section located at the bottom of my resume. Every employer, depending upon the company or job, also vary in what they prefer but that is what I do and it usually works for me. Also most states have some type of career or unemployment agency that will help you with these issues, including formulating resumes and cover letters, for free.

Near the top have a section called Qualifications, Or, Related Skills, and list whatever you want. You can do it in bullet form; or in a row column format, maybe three across three down, like a table.

Then go into the Work Experience section.

I would cover the baking skills in your cover letter where you can tell in narrative form about your experience outside of work.

I like the word “Qualifications” because you can put comparable or transferrable skills in this area to show the different ways you are qualified to do the job.

Another way I would head it would be “Abilities” and put things like -able to work under pressure, -able to adjust to a variety of situations, – able to respond to immediate needs, etc.

This is a list of resume phrases you can use. Use this for ideas because most of them are overused, wordy and washed-out.

I just remembered on my resume I title it Summary of Qualifications.

@JLeslie So for example do you think I should have my info, phone number and stuff, and then have my “career goal” which at this point is a generic-y statement since I’m not curently even working towards a degree, so should I Just delete that part? Anyhow, either way, would i then have Qualifications, then say for instance: fast learner, fast worker, dependable, etc….and then throw in “a love for baking at home”....how should I phrase that so that it sounds professional but they also understand its something I really enjoy?

I can email you one of mine if you want. PM me your email address if you are interested.

I’m not sure you should put career goal or not, I would have to see the entire resume probably. Career goal you could write why within the goal. The why is what you seem to want to convey? To secure a job with a quality bakery to utilize my skills at baking and love for the profession. Just making it up, need to work on the wording.

Yes, things like fast learner, detail oriented (baking you have to be precise)....oh, maybe you could write Related Experience as a section, and write out the baking you have done for parties, and new recipes you have created, stuff like that.
