Cold compress. If it’s coming from physical tension, do some neck and shoulder stretches.

Honestly, I’ve never had much luck getting rid of migraines without medication (OTC or Rx). I can dull the pain a bit, but not get rid of the migraine.

Medication is your best bet, obviously, but if that’s out… try lying down in a very dark, quiet space. If you have to, cover your eyes to get it as dark as possible.

Is it possible for you to have sex right now? It works. Just sayin..

auhsojsa's avatar

@digitalimpression Nope, and my experience with that is I’ll just fall into a slumber, which is fine, I might need sleep, but I don’t want to get that “pounding” migraine. (usually after orgasm for me my head starts throbbing). Luckily I’m at the stage where it’s just really intense light and I’m doing some breathing excercise along with water. However San Diego sun is too bright :( Feels like the above suggestions are work so far, too broke for otc atm. Maybe a cold coffee will do?

I was taught biofeedback in college and it was the best thing I ever learned. I don’t get headaches as long as I can catch it early and make my adjustments. If your interested let me know. Most people think I’m wacked, but I can’t remember my last headache.

@auhsojsa Cool. San Diego. I miss it immensely. Well, too bad medicine is out. There are a lot of funny headache medicines.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@auhsojsa I was taught the headache occurs because of vasoconstriction in the brain. The idea was to try and relax everything and work at getting blood out of the brain and into other areas of the body. Work on getting blood to the extremities, like the back of the hands. Imagine your hands are in very warm sunlight and feel the warmth develop. Relax the neck and shoulders. Concentrate totally on relaxing. I was able to raise the temperature of my hands by a couple of degrees. It sounds totally wacked and if you told me about it now, I’d not believe it, but it works. It just requires a lot of focus. I don’t think I have a single aspirin or painkiller in my house, and haven’t for years.

I actually find that hot compresses help me.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@philosopher Hot seems like it would help.

Dark room, cold compress, no noise and dare the cat to meow.

Honestly, I’ve had migrines, since I was 19 and only a visit to the ER and a pain shot works for me.

auhsojsa's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Guess what? It worked. Well I noticed my hands were super chilly. And it felt good to put it near my eyes and rub them out. I went to go get a refreshment (starbucks java chip) and I guess the caffeine kicked in on time. Eh, I hate to defeat a migraine that way. The Devils of the Health world defeat me today!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@auhsojsa Glad it worked. It takes concentration and trying different angles, but once you learn what works for you it’s nice to have in the bag of tricks.

I do visualization, mediation and more.
I try to avoid taking Medication often.
Recently nothing works well.
I wonder if massage or Acupuncture would help?
Someone suggested Botox.
I dislike injecting chemicals into my face. Does it actually work long term? What are the side effects?
Since my Sinuses throb would they have to inject there? A little close to the brain for me.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@philosopher Whoa, sinus says something else. See your Dr, that’s allergies or something else. Sorry I missed that before.

philosopher's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe
I think it is finally getting better.
I have No signs of infection. I have allergies.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@philosopher I had mean sinus pain. I had to take a steroid spray. It helps, but there are side affects.

If it is truly a migraine, not just a regular headache, the best seems to be figure out what brings them on and avoid those things. What has worked for people I know is completely eliminating caffeine, or, if that seems impossible, be sure to get your caffeine regularly in similar doses daily, and see if chocolate or alcohol (for some it is just red wine) are triggers, and then stop those as well if they affect you.

Seems like you are recovering from this one.

Glad your better! Next time you can try a light peppermint oil on your temples, or if you don’t have the oil, peppermint tea could help. I find that the oil works almost instantly.

MollyMcGuire's avatar

If you don’t want to use medication, you probably don’t have a migraine. You can try a dark room and rest, but that will not get rid of it. There is too much blood in your head and until you restrict the vessels your migraine will stay with you.

I’d like to thank the mods for allowing me to ask this question. I know there were older ones from the past. Are medical questions allowed for “re asking?” Or was it only allowed because it’s a “per year” kind of deal?

augustlan's avatar

@auhsojsa As long as it wasn’t asked recently (or hasn’t been asked a billion times), just about any question can be re-asked. Glad you’re feeling better! :)

@auhsojsa
Thank you for asking this question. I have the same problem.

@auhsojsa
Today I finally got Capsain Nasal Spray.
I first heard about Capsacin Nasal Spray on Dr. Oz. I have used many sprays prescribed by doctors. They did little to nothing.
I got it today. It burns but I think it is actually relieving the sinus pressure.
I am amazed that it is easing the pressure.
It is unfortunate that few doctors know.
If anyone has a headache try it.
I think mine are triggered by stress and allergies. The light and noise accelerate the pain. They make me dizzy.

3 Aspirin and a double shot of espresso often help me. Without meds? Forget about it. I’d have the thing for days on end then.

Glad to hear you’re done with this one @auhsojsa. You may want to reconsider your stance on meds. As @JLeslie stated above, it’d be wise to figure out your triggers and avoid them.

400 mg Ibuprofen to be taken immediately when you notice the migraine building up. In many cases without meds isn’t a good idea.
