Does the Master Cleanse really work?

Asked by realisticality (45points) February 22nd, 2012

My roommate started using the Master Cleanse that Hollywood celebrities started using to lose weight. It’s basically, lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. While it tastes great, I’m wondering if it actually works? (I haven’t used it as the cleanse diet, just to drink occasionally cause I find it yummy) Is it safe?

It’s a gimmick. It is basically fasting and you can fast for a day on water and juice.
The bowels naturally “cleanse” themselves and if you’re eating light and healthy with lots of fresh fruits/veggies, plenty of water, you’re in good shape and will naturally lose weight on a light and healthy diet.

Yes, it does work. But not if your goal is to look like Angelina Jolie in 10 days. I have done it and found it great when I am beginning to feel sluggish…or when the seasons change. However…it is not for the faint-hearted. Nor is it something you decide to go on because you have to lose weight quickly (though you can.) If you are vegetarian, or vegan, it is easier to do this. If you are eating Big Mac’s or going to the all-you-can-eat buffet at
Mr Lardollop’s on a daily basis and then decide to do this cold turkey…it will be excruciating. That’s why something easier on your system will be better.

The Master Cleanse is a cleanse , not a fad diet. It has been around for decades, long before Hollywood made it popular.

If you want to feel good and lose weight and do something radically healthy for your body long-term go here link

I am with @Coloma…eating lightly long-term is healthier. And whatever sort of diet you do undertake, be prepared to deal with the emotions that come up…when you don’t have food to anesthetize yourself anymore. Keep a box of Kleenex handy and warn your friends you may not be in the best of moods.

Good luck and go in good health!

No! Maple syrup and lemon juice will neither cleanse your gastric tract, nor help you lose weight.

If you want to “cleanse” yourself, drink 296mL of Magnesium Citrate in one gulp. Safe, and will do the job.

If you want to lose weight, there are no miracles. Just eat healthy and exercise and lose the weight gradually, not on a binge.

@DarlingRhadamanthus pretty much said what I was going to say. It does work, but if you’re a fat slob to begin with you’re not going to be able to do it, and nor will it produce the results you want. It would probably be too shocking to the body. It’s more for people who like @DarlingRhadamanthus said, just need to cleanse their system and feel less sluggish. Usually these people aren’t doing it to “diet” either. Cause its not really a diet.

@HungryGuy Cayenne will clear you out though, and fast. Ever taken a shot of cayenne pepper? It is incredibly good for you, but it really comes out the other end.

Diets like this (along with colon irrigation etc) are not a good idea. What they do is tend to strip the bowel of the “good” bacteria that you need for a healthy bowel leading to problems with your digestive system. I really wouldn’t bother wasting your time.
