How do I clean a barbecue grill?

Asked by jca (36062points) June 18th, 2012

I am having a party on Saturday. I took the inside parts of the grill out and put EZ Off on them. I’ve done that before and it came out beautiful. I want to clean the grill around the knobs and the top of the hood. I don’t want to scrub it or put the hose on it if that won’t be good for it.

How do I clean the barbecue grill without ruining it?

Vinegar works well too!

This is a basic guide to cleaning your gill inside and out.

Are you talking about the grill, or the whole thing? I just use a wire brush on the grill part. That’s the only part I clean, since that’s the only part that touches the food.

@wundayatta: I did the inside by taking the parts out and putting EZ Off on them. I am now referring to the rest of the grill – the top, the part where the knobs are, etc.

A wire brush attachment to an an electric drill works good. I also used it to take the carbon build up off my car engine’s head when I did a valve job on it. Note: If you try this then be sure to wear eye protection.

I spray the Easy-Off on the outside of the grill. I put newspaper down to catch any drips and spray the sucker down.

Yep. Like @bkcunningham we use EZ Off on the outside. The other product that is a must have for this and for other similar tasks is Super Clean Degreaser The stuff is a miracle worker on the outsides of grills, ovens, anything you think won’t come clean. We use it in bad apartments to make them look spiffy & nw again.

Jellies, feel free to advise against this, but I’ve used WD 40 on the outside of my grill. It seems to do a nice job of cleaning and oiling up the grill to a shiny state.

WD40 is a silicone oil, not edible. Be careful not to get it on the grilles.

However, it’s completely safe to implant into breasts. ;-)

The easiest and best way is to clean it while it’s hot. Heat up the grill to 300, then of course turn it completely off, then take the regular grill brush/scraper to it. Of course being careful not to burn yourself.

If you give it a light scrub/clean after every use, nothing will ever build up and it will stay shiney!

This is coming from someone who has used the SHISH out of their grills.
