How can we raise money to buy our band equipment?

Asked by Kokoro (1424points) June 25th, 2012

I am just starting a new band and I’m trying to find a legit way for our bass player to buy an amp. He got rid of it when he thought he wasn’t going to perform anymore.

It’s been difficult to find jobs here, so I was thinking of busking the street but I’m not sure if that’s right to do?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Quite a few places will ask you to get a license/permit type thing to busk on the street these are usually free (you just have to get one to be allowed) so ask your local council or police if you are allowed to busk and how to get a permit. I have never been busking because I can not play any instruments (!) however I think that busking is great, I feel it really brightens up a town or city centre! It is of course right to do if you are able (just make sure you dont impose on other people’s turf some people can be quite territorial about where and when they play) Also don’t just put up a sign saying “for fundraising”, explain that it is for band equipment. You do not want to make people think this money is going to a registered charity. You could also ask around local bars and cafes and see if they will let you play there for donations (bars will obviously depend on how old you are!)
My housemate goes busking fairly regularly to make an extra few quid but also to play people his music. Get your band name out there and hit the streets!

As a person who regularly supports good buskers, I would guess that you are better off finding another form of money-raising.

Would you feel comfortable answering these questions? How much money will a new amp cost? What country do you live in? This might help us identify opportunities.

Remember what they say…

“How do you get a bass player off of your porch?”
“Pay him for the pizza.”

most of the musicians I know have a day job to supplement their habit, er, music.

do some solo gigs. make sure you are within the law.

It really depends on how old you guys are. First of all, I’d look for a used amp so you can save some money. If none of you have jobs, you could always put up fliers around your neighborhood or ask neighbors if they need any yard work, dog walking, etc. People are busy and there’s always a demand for stuff like that. You could also have a yard sale and sell some old stuff you don’t need. If you’re really patient, just start a jar and collect your spare change there. Every little bit helps.

If you all still live at home, maybe you can make a deal with your parents. X amount of practice = x dollars toward the amp. That way, you’ll show them that you’re working hard toward a goal, not just getting a free handout.

I would think that manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine would bring in some much needed cash flow.

I don’t condone it, but, it is a proven money maker.

You can try fundraising online and getting individuals and businesses to sponsor you. Check out www.piggybackr.com.
