Well, Shakespeare wrote a lot of sonnets, and he was one of the most famous poets /playwrights in the history of English.

The history of the sonnet allegedly invented several centuries before Shakespeare. It is a compact, pleasing and yet complex form and meter that allows for lots of good stuff.
