Aren’t e-commerce websites supposedly more secure? Don’t they claim to be better at safeguarding personal information and credit card numbers?

I’ve been developing e-commerce sites now for over 15 years. I’m a Yahoo! Store developer and Yahoo! Small Business Partner.

E-commerce websites have a shopping cart/checkout system included. If they are using any major merchant account to accept credit cards online, then their cart, checkout pages and hosting must meet the PCI Standards. Those standards do impose serious security measures to keep shopper’s personal information out of the hands of hackers. Global e-commerce sales will top $1.25 trillion this year, and a tiny tiny fraction of that business is touched by fraud.

E-Commerce sites are sites who conduct business directly on their websites, pretty well outlined above in ETPro’s post.

Many are often referred to also as “e-tailers” , those are retail type websites at which you buy something, pay for it and they ship it to you. Electronic retail. But there are still differences.

It’s a syllogism : All e-tailers are e-commerce sites. But only some e-commerce sites are e-tailers.
