What does it mean in a document that asks for my signature and a "Witness signature"?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) February 5th, 2013

It states

Signature
(then it skips down a line)
Witness signature (if person signed with a mark)

What does it mean if person signed with a mark?

I’m pretty sure that’s for people who can’t actually sign their name, for whatever reason. In the old days, illiterate people ‘signed’ with an “X”. The witness is to verify that “X” is actually the person the document refers to.
