How can I be snoring with a bipap?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) March 5th, 2013

Yesterday I got my super fanc-ay new bipap machine. Last night, to say the least, was sort of hellish trying to fall asleep. I ended up having to take something to help me sleep, sit on the couch until I dozed, and then quickly put my mask on and get into bed before I was fully awake again.

Anyway, I asked my fiance how I did… and he said he could hear me snoring through the mask. What the heck? Isn’t this machine supposed to keep my airways open? The reason my machine is so fanc-ay is because it’s supposed to autocorrect the pressure all by its lonesome.

I am waiting for my sleep tech dude to call me back; I’m told he conducted a sleep study last night so he probably won’t call for a while. I’m just curious if anyone else here can explain this.

Apparently, it is is not uncommon. See this. I, myself, had only minimal luck with a cpap.

Your machine may need to be adjusted to provide a little more base pressure so that snoring is better controlled. Too bad the tech seems to be too busy to provide the support you require.

Is the mask forming a complete seal?

If you are overweight, losing weight will help the apnea and the snoring. My mom was the same, but after losing 50lbs, she’s quiet again.

Slightly different – I don’t think my husband still snores, but many nights the air escapes around his mask and makes a loud-ish noise.
