Opinions on 'The Host' by Stephanie Meyer?

Asked by DarknessWithin (987points) March 25th, 2013

So the second book/series (I am not sure if it is a series or not) by Stephanie Meyer author of the Twilight Saga is about to hit the big screen.
The trailers look pretty decent, and I am a fan of the Twilight saga (though as of two years ago I have a new obsession) but there are undeniably quite a few writing flaws in it. The sparkling which I can only guess came from the dream she had written the series around and the fact that Bella and Edward produced a child to name my biggest issues with it.

So how is ‘The Host’? Story? Characters? How well written is it in comparison toTwilight?

I read the Twilight Series and saw/purchased all the films and I enjoyed them, though we all know they’re no masterpiece. It’s just a series of dramatic books made for teens that was placed on the big screen with pretty people on it. I took Twilight for what it was, no more and no less. I do, however, love me some Rob Pattinson. I thought he has great in Remember Me. Hopefully his career will continue.

I haven’t read The Host, as it isn’t my thang, but the Amazon.com reviews were pretty favorable, more so than Twilight. I think it’ll be a decent film, but taken at face value. It won’t be winning an Oscar.

@livelaughlove21 I too am a fan of the Twilight series, and know it for what it is. I found her brand of vampire quite unique although flawed.

Robert Pattinson is amazing, Up until last year when I discovered Sam Witwer the hunk in my profile picture I was crushing mad hard on Rob. I have seen every single one of his films and own nearly all. He was most brilliant in Remember Me and Little Ashes.

The theme of ‘The Host’ isn’t my thing either but neither was vampires before I read Twilight. This is why I wonder if it’s worth a read.

I only saw the first Twilight movie and I thought it was entertaining. I don’t crush on Robert Pattinson but I do think he has some acting talent and don’t agree with people who tear him down. I guess that kind of criticism is par for the course with teen heartthrobs. If you guys liked him in his other movies and haven’t seen Water for Elephants you have to see it. I thought he was really good in that. And there was a nice chemistry between him and Reese Witherspoon. I loved the movie overall. It really brought the book to life.

@Earthgirl I have seen every one of Rob’s films and own nearly all. Water for Elephants was amazing, I really don’t understand why he was not nominated for an Oscar as best actor for this film. He is an amazingly talented man who deserved it for this film if not any other. And I had read the book TWICE before the film came out. The first time I had to start it over right away because I did not want it to end.
I also enjoy Reese Witherspoon and was glad to have her as Marlena, she performed the role beautifully.

Those who criticize Rob are mistaking the man for the character. They are Edward haters and that really pisses me off.

I really enjoyed The Host. The first couple chapters moved a bit slow, but if you hang in there, it gets MUCH better. Unlike the Twilight series, The Host was written for adults. I found it very thought provoking. What would I do in a similar situation? Would I be able to forgive and learn to live with an alien being whose race has basically taken over humanity? For me, the main story is the way the relationship between the host body, Melanie and the alien, Wanderer changes over time.

I watched the Movie a few months ago. As usual, the movie wasn’t as good as the book. If you enjoyed the movie, I definitely recommend reading the book.
