Why might a doctor order a pelvic/abdominal CT scan after a colonoscopy?

Asked by Tequila (337points) April 19th, 2013

I had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on Monday morning, and they ended up doing bloodwork after. Today they called and now want me to have a CT scan. What could they be looking for? I’m sorry to ask, I know you’re not doctors but I am starting to panic!

It could be any irregularity that they saw in your blood work. You could call your doctor and ask.

Don’t panic. Sometimes shadows or other issues need more investigation, but that doesn’t mean it’s cancer or anything, could be a blockage, cyst or something non-threatening. Did they tell you what the blood work shoed or is it still in process?

You may want to ask @rarebear.

The blood work actually turned out to be a test that ruled out celiac disease. They also took 4 biopsies which I haven’t heard anything about yet… they also found weird patchy stuff some places in my bowel, but again, haven’t heard anything.

@Tequila There are so many things it could be that I wouldn’t speculate. There are lots of good websites out there that menion ulcers and all kinds of things, so don’t work yourself up too much. Either way, good or bad, you have to be strong and face it.

How long ago were the biopsies, I’m a little surprised that you’re not being kept informed. Insist on it.

Phone your doctor and ask him. You are paying him to provide a service and part of that service is to keep you informed on what’s going on. Don’t worry, they won’t be annoyed.

The biopsies were taken during the colonoscopy this past Monday morning. I haven’t seen the gastro Dr. for my follow-up yet. I’m just going off of what I’ve been told so far from the nurse.
I just found it odd to order a CT scan after a colonoscopy. I thought with all my bowel issues a colonoscopy would be the best test. So I just wonder what else they’re looking for… I know I shouldn’t be looking too much into it; I have an increased chance of several types of cancer (bowel is one of them) so I’m a bit of a worrywart.

@Tequila I understand completely. I’m a worst-case scenerio type person, that way I’m prepared for the worst in all cases generally. Just remember there have been a lot of progress with cancer, it’s no longer a death warrant, if that is even what it is.

You need to call your doctor and ask why the CT scan was ordered. Otherwise it’s just speculation.

Why not ask the doctor. That’s why you’re paying him.

@Tequila I am getting concerned about you too. Please ask your doctor what he suspects or is trying to rule out. I don’t say that because I am against you asking for medical advice on the web, I say that because we simply don’t have any information to go on to help you. It isn’t fair for him to keep upu completely in the dark with your history. Of course you are going to worry about the worst scenerio. If he isn’t willing to be a partner with you in your health care then maybe you will want a different doctor, but I think give him a chance to let him explain to you what is going on.

Any updates?

Sounds like they are doing things backwards… you do the scan first and then do the physical stuff. It would be like having a fractured leg and they set it first and then take a scan afterwards….DERP!
