Has anyone besides me ever seen a giant owl?

Asked by strangeuniverse (130points) April 22nd, 2013

The Owl was 4 feet tall, I know – it’s unblievable, but my wife was with me, it landed right in front of our car, I had to slam the brakes on to keep from running over it, so then it was standing right at my bumper – looking straight at me! I honked my horn for a minute or 2 before the thing would fly away – This was in Loveland, Colorado – a few miles from The Big Thompson Canyon in late Spetember/early October. It was a Giant White Owl with a bit of black. Eyes as big as Silver dollars…

I forgot to say that I saw the Owl in 1998.. and it’s the Big Thompson River Canyon right before you go into the Rossevelt Forrest on the way up to Estes Park where the “Stanley Hotel” is.. absolutely true..

Yes. I was hiking in Elfin Forest Preserve near Morro Bay, California when a huge owl dive-bombed me. I must have been close to its nest. I’ve never been more frightened by an animal. (well, there was this possum in D.C. that startled me and made me run the other way when it hissed at me. those things are ugly)

I looked up a list for what kinds of birds are in Colorado, and you guys do seem to have Snowy Owls. But those aren’t all that big without the wing span, although I’m sure it’s entirely possible that it was just a freakishly big one. Or there might be other types of owls that are white. I love owls, but I really don’t know much about them.

I’ve seen some owls, although never any real huge ass ones, although at the zoo I did see one that was rather sizely. Thing looked like a fucking eagle. Sucks that it was stuck in a cage the size of a living room and couldn’t fly around.

Though I am a little skeptical :) I want to point out something. It is possible it was a larger species than a snowy owl, but appeared to be a snowy due to coloration. It could have been a partially leucistic bird, a condition similar to albinism.

That said, the largest species of owl is under 3 feet in height.

You should be skeptical, it’s not a normal encounter, but it happened, I lived in Northern Colorado from 1990 to 1998 – and this happened within less than a month of us leaving Colorado( I was 30 years old at the time) – I now live in Texas. I mean I am about 6’ (foot) tall and over 200 and there was no way I was getting out of the car – in fact I was almost going in to shock with disbelief, yea it was rather scary and no other cars came along this highway until the thing was flying away, my own mother later told me I should have ran over it and hauled it back. I thought it was an incredible animal – rememeber the Rocky Mountains are very close – and if you’ve ever been there – then you know there’s alot of area to hide and places people can’t go. I’ve tried to understand what’s it means? I still have no idea? It’s kinda bothered me for a long time – which is why I asked this question, – Thanks all!
