I messed up my computer when I did a virus scan, please help!

Asked by 8magnum8 (121points) April 24th, 2013

So the other day I got a virus, I ran Malwarebytes and when it was done it had a checked list of what I should delete, so I “Delete all checked” ad when I went to open Google chrome, Skype, Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc. It asked me what I wanted to open it with.
EX: I will double click Firefox and it asks me what I want to open it with, and I click on Firefox, then it opens but something else pops up..

You have chosen to open:
firefox.exe
from C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox

Would you like to save this file?
Save file cancel

I click save file and it saves to my downloads as a Firefox application. When I double click to open it it does the same thing. How do I fix this?

Try a system restore. Should be under disk utilities or something.

It sounds like your virus scanner didn’t pick up a certain problem.. Try going back into your virus scanner and go to rescue then click on the date of the last action that will restore what you checked earlier which should eliminate that open with request, then find your windows malware program and set it for deep scan.. Once done, go back to virus scan and repeat. If the same problem arises then repeat the above steps again except this time go into system restore and choose a date a few days earlier than when the virus warning popped up. Once restored you shouldn’t have to virus scan again. If this doesn’t work, take it to the geek squad as you’ve been deeply infected. You didn’t happen to open a DHL email notice of intent to deliver did you? If yes then that was your culprit.
