Can anyone recommend a good dog food for a chihuahua prone to hypoglycemia?

Asked by Tequila (337points) May 13th, 2013

I am making the switch from puppy to adult food soon and would like to find a good food to help hypoglycemic episodes from happening. She has to eat small meals throughout the day. I am currently feeding her a grain-free Blue Buffalo puppy formula.

Your vet will be able to supply you with the food you need. We bought direct from our vet when our dog had skin problems.

I like the Blue Buffalo products for our cats. If you’ve done well with their puppy food, transition into one of their adult foods.

I don’t know about storebought dog food. But I have successfully fed green smoothies to a rottweiler, not mine but my mothers. She gets fed ice cream and junk food often and when I come over her legs are invariable trembling she’s sluggish and eyes foggy. I give her some smoothie and she loves them and will shamelessly beg for her dose of liquid fruits and vegies.

Instant perk up, legs stop shaking energy bright eyes etc and when I do this a couple days in a row she is literally another dog. But I don’t visit often enough to keep her regulated. However when I house sit for them I never have this problem with her.

I have another friend who supplements green human food for some of the meals for her show minpins and two schnauzers. Yes she cooks for them. But she does this in advance or in tandem with her own meals. Then freezes meal size portions for them later.

I agree with @hearkat . Keep her with the same brand, just go to adult food, or adult that has her issue in mind.
I have a Chi-Pom mix. He was on Hills Science Diet. When I got him back (from previous owner) and switched him from Hills to Purina Little Bites he got sick. Had to take him to the emergency vet – he woke me up puking and it went on off and on for an hour. I took him to my regular vet the next day. After tests, found out he has pancreatitus. So now I switched him back to Hills Science Diet Light. Been a few years and he seems fine now. I regret changing his food. I switched to what my other dogs eat, because Hills was so expensive. Now I get the 16# bag for $30 – they wanted me to get the Prescription type at $45. I read up on his illness, and try to keep his fat intake low. Have not had any more issues.
So I recommend not changing her brand. My dog is 8#, they are so sensitive!
