Do you think Big Tobacco has thought of this trick yet ?

Asked by Aster (20023points) May 28th, 2013

I was thinking if cigarettes are about $7 per pack wouldn’t it be a smart business savvy idea to sell them for $4 a pack with each pack holding ten instead of twenty cigarettes? A lot of people who only have $4 would think, “I don’t have $7 but I can afford $4” Do you believe a lot of people would buy them? The tobacco companies would make an extra .50 over what they make now.

I always liked the idea of the half pack. When I was in Belize you could buy a pack of 10 or 20 cigarettes. It wasn’t like your example though. A pack was $4 and a half pack was $2. It was nice though cause it would help me cut back on smoking. though I suppose that is kind of the opposite of what tobacco companies want…

Been there done that. Here is a four year old attempt by Altria ( old name Phillip Morris ) Smoke Rites

I think they have them here in Australia. Also a lot of places in the less wealthy areas of USA will sell them one at a time. Actually, even though it is illegal, they do that here too.

Why not one at a time for $0.50? Big Tobacco’s now getting $10 a pack and even a panhandler can come up with a couple of quarters.

People who can’t afford a pack of cigarettes almost always roll there own with filter tubes and pipe cut tobacco. It is really cheap. A 16 ounce bag of pipe cut tobacco costs about $15 and can last 2 to 3 weeks or more depending on how much you smoke. The filter tubes are $1.50 to $2 and come 200 to a box.

I rolled my own for quite a while when I was between jobs. They taste pretty bad but it sure beats smoking nothing and you get used to the taste.

@ETpro Big Tobacco isn’t getting most of that $10. Most of it goes to Federal, State and Local taxes. If you buy from a duty free store you only pay about $3 a pack, the rest of the cost is taxes.

Don’t get me wrong, Big Tobacco is raking in the profits, but so is the IRS.

@WestRiverrat Yes, I know, but the manufacturers get a cut of the selling price. As the price per cancer stick goes up, so does their take.

Wow, ya’ll better get to Missouri, we have the lowest smoke tax in the US supposedly. All the truckers tell me so..lol

I pay $3 a pack for Pall Mall’s (yes, I quit at least 3–4 times a year, I know it’s horrible.)
