What comes from Thailand in small parcels labeled "cosmetic"?

Asked by Jeruba (55831points) June 14th, 2013

If small brown mailing envelopes were arriving fairly often in the mail, with postage and customs stickers from Thailand, handwritten return addresses, and the word “cosmetic” listed under “contents,” what would you think they contained?

The parcels are about the right size to hold, say, two decks of cards or a small bottle of aspirin in a box.

I’m assuming it’s something ordered online, and I have my doubts that it’s actually cosmetics.

Could be any variety of drugs, or it could just be a cosmetic that someone is fool enough to buy from another country online.
Have you opened one? Is the packages’s weight proportional to what you would expect from something that size?

It sounds suspect to me, as well. I’d Google the return address.

They’re not mine.

I would assume it was cosmetics. For one, many famous cosmetics companies have outlets in Thailand from which one can buy brand name merchandise at reduced prices. For another, there are a lot of independent cosmetic shops that are run out Southeast Asia. I have a friend in the Philippines who sells perfume online. She sends her stuff with a “cosmetics” label on it. From her I have learned that labeling an item as cosmetics can actually bring it under extra scrutiny (due to the various substances that cosmetics may contain), so I would doubt it was anything illegal.

It’s cosmetics. If it’s drugs it’s labeled ‘stamps’ or ‘sample’s. hmmm, now just how do I know this….

It seemed odd to me that a 26-year-old male would be purchasing a lot of cosmetics, whereas I could picture that as a cover for something else.

I thought someone who’d had some pertinent personal experience might let me know.

I have pertinent experience. Cosmetics are scrutinzed more closely than samples or stamps. A 26 year old would purchase all kinds of things, perhaps. Why are you interested in what he is buying? Is it coming to your address? If it is, simply open one and see.

Because I am worried about drugs coming in.

Opening someone else’s mail is against the law.

If you have serious concerns and no personal relationship with the addressee (so that you’d feel guilty, for example, when the search proved negative), contact a US Postal Inspector. You can find a contact at any US Post Office.

As others have already noted, though, if this is already arriving through the US Mail, then I would imagine that there has already been a certain level of scrutiny applied. Your specific concerns: that it’s addressed to a mid-twenties male, that it’s a recurring shipment, that he himself wears no obvious cosmetic products, etc. may prompt a more intensive review. I don’t know if you would be informed or not of the results; that’s something to discuss with the postal authorities. In any case, if you’re on record with the observation / complaint, then you can rest easy that even if they are drug shipments and he is later arrested, you’ve done your own due diligence. (Make sure that you make your complaint / request in writing.) As the landlady (I presume), you’d then be covered in case of any extended civil or criminal prosecution.

Oh, and consider voting libertarian candidates into office who pledge to strike these stupid drug laws from the books. It’s not like they’re effective at stopping the drug trade or drug use; they just get good people in trouble.

@Jeruba is this a family member and your address? A room mate? A tenant? Your son? If your address is being used and you are concerned that someone is shipping drugs to your home or property, you would not be prosecuted for opening it and checking it out. Or perhaps you could have a friendly little chat with this person. I can’t imagine any other reason why you would wonder what a 26 year old man would be having sent for his personal use. ( Diet aids, vitamins, he has a preference he hasn’t shared with you and does want cosmetics, the list goes on).

It sounds like some kind of drug. My brother in law lives in Thailand and we get those envelopes posted here, though I haven’t opened them all, the ones I have are either steroids or sex pills.

I really think @Headhurts called this one right and I think it’s sex pills, some kind of lotion or pills. I wonder if Jeruba is talking about someone she works with.
